Stevie has been throwing money around like hotcakes, I wonder if he would be willing to move off of zadina's contract by taking Garland back.

We could bury Zadina in Abbotsford if he doesn't impress at camp, would only cost us $700,000 against the cap to park him there and let him work on his game.

Nope, he made it perfectly clear to the Redwings that he would not report to the AHL if sent there, I can't see him thinking differently here or anywhere else.

This must be the most short sighted move Ive seen an NHL team make in recent memory.

No, that would be the trade that got us this lemon of a contract in the first place.  This was the foreseeable future as soon as GMJB made the most short-sighted move in sports history.

  3. I disliked the trade, I disliked OEL and his crap contract and I hate that we are in a position that we have to buy this guy out.  1 FACKING SEASON BENNING.  We had 1 season to wait out LE and we would have been in a fantastic position cap wise.

I strongly dislike you Benning...very strongly.

If he was making $4 million I bet there'd be very little said about him. Other than his footspeed.

He really needs to make a commitment to improving his skating in the offseason. Get into camp the best shape of his career and see what happens.

I agree, I am encouraged that he recognizes that as a weakness and intends to address it this offseason.

Ok going to get back to you next year on your expertise assessment. I looked and he hasn't changed much other then a small decline in points when he first got here. He was god awful this year, no doubt, but what player doesn't go through that, especially when they had a major injury like a broken foot.

If you show a little patience you might see that the situation is not so dire. Myers is gone regardless next year so I foresee an improved group in the D core next year.

Not just me that is giving the opinion. CanucksArmy wrote an article about it when Boudreau scratched him.

There is his 0.1 GAR from Evolving-Hockey, which gave him a generous score on the PK, at even strength he's a -2.0 GAR. (Goals above replacement)

Natural Stat Trick shows that he was on ice for highest rate of shots against at 5v5 and 2nd highest xGA and actual GA. Only guy who was worse was Stillman.

I would prefer we trade him if we can since he has the full no move.  He might come back from injury and maybe push himself to be a top 4 on this team but paying north of 7 mil for a #4/5 guy is stupid.  Everyone would be up in arms if Alvin offered 7.2mil for a #4 UFA.  This was a bad decision by Benning trying to save his job. 1 more year of patience and we would have been in a great spot, with no OEL, no Garland who also is overpaid.

Next year he's a year older, likely another step slower. He is a smart player but slow is real bad in the current NHL.  I hope I am wrong because I hate seeing 7mil in cap space struggle to contribute, I'd like to see the Canucks eventually win a cup.  I finally got to see my Cubbies do it in 2016, but between the Cubs, Jays and Canucks the parade routes have been very few and far between.

Our owner should cut the cheque to buyout OEL. He won’t, but he should.

Either that or retain for a smaller cap hit and sell him to a bottom feeder that needs to hit the cap floor.  OEL at 3.75-4 mil a year might have some value to a team, for us he is simply too expensive for what he brings.

  7. 10 hours ago, EdgarM said:

Don't forget Tocchet, Gonchar and Foote all earned their own Cup rings.

We need good reliable defenseman and OEL was that before his injury, why would we think he is on the decline for another reason?

We have accumulated the most difficult positions so we are looking for a 3rd line center and not a #2 Center or a #1 Center. We are looking for complimentary players for Hughes and Hronek. Easier then finding those two and way cheaper. If OEL is able to get back to what he was before his injury, that leaves us with just finding a partner for Hughes. Who says we need to do all of this ASAP are we instant contenders now?

There needs to be Cap shedding and we have a multitude of contenders for this, it is no secret.

We have plenty of time to shed what we don't want and gain what we need, there is no hurry, I am just glad there is a plan and it looks like it will work towards us contending one day. Good times are ahead.

Look at OEL before the trade, he was steadily declining in all aspects of the game. Many here chalked it up to playing for Arizona, it wasn't because of Arizona.  His body has aged faster than his peers. He's Edler right now.  He is only going to continue the decline he was clearly showing before dumb dumb Benning traded for him.

The best thing we can hope for is retaining and trading him because spending 7.5 mil on anything less than a top 2 defenseman is stupid.

I don't get this either. They were left with a mess and I don't think its easy to rid themselves of Benning's failures. They are not signing blank cheque's nor are they giving our assets away for nothing. They seem to be taking the patient approach. What's wrong with that anyway its not like we are contending for the cup next year.

Myers is gone no matter what happens next year and probably a couple of our wingers. I am willing to wait to see how it pans out and I am confident these guys know what they are doing. They kind of have Stanley Cup rings to prove it so I am going to go with their plan. ::D

They have rings because they inherited 2 of the best players in hockey in Sid & Gino, a #1 defenseman in Letang and a world class goalie.

This GM saying we aren't buying players out and that he thinks OEL will magically stop the 5 year decline he has been on is not a confidence builder for me.

We need a 3rd line center, 2 more top 4 defensemen, cap space and a legit backup for Demko.  Buying out OEL won't help but trading him with retention will, if we retain a max of 3mil it might make him tradeable. 7.5mil for a 4/5 defenseman is too much cap.  On a good team with a good defense he isn't more than that.

Myers definitely needs to go. Too much cap for what he brings, if he was half his current cap he'd be a solid addition, at 6m he's an albatross.

My interpretation is that he wasn't taking a jab on his team mates. I think it was more on the organization especially the deteriorating relationship this season.

Which is fair I've worked in companies where I generally like my team and have nothing but good things to say but just got fed up with the company as a whole

Yeah, as both Bieksa and Hrudy said, it's just pent up hurt. They've been there and understand.  I get it, he wasn't expecting to be traded, the front office didn't have the best relationship with him and went public with some hints that they didn't value him as much.  I'm positive this will be his one and only jab.  Wishing for good things for Bo.

Guys, Hronek was injured well before the trade and it wasn't a surprise to anyone.

Why risk him playing through the shoulder injury when the four month summer break is upon us?

If that's the thought process why did he average 24min a game over 4 games first?  Something isn't right here.

  11. So the pattern for this team is they absolutely cannot handle pressure or expectations.  The second they have either they cave in.  The moment that pressure dissipates they can play just fine.  This team isn't a playoff team, if they ever made it there it will be on Demko's coattails.  Once there the pressure will get to them and a sweep is the most likely outcome.

Good news is we have further weakened our draft position and with the group that picked Lekkerimaki last draft with a middle of the pack pick I expect to see another miss this draft.

Given the moves made by this front office it appears we will forever strive for lightning in a bottle trades like Kravtsov and Raty, to try to pry open the playoff door.  I wouldn't hate this if the goal was the Stanley Cup but this and the last management groups have stressed that playoffs is the goal, AKA Aquaman wants some free money right meow.

All of a sudden, we're creeping back towards .500. Who would've thought?

Literally everyone on team tank that has seen this movie on repeat season after season.

Shocker that once the pressure is off this bad team can beat terrible teams.  This run will once again convince the optimists that this team is a playoff contender.  They'll spend the offseason highlighting the record for a small portion of the overall season as proof this is a good team.

This will not be a good team until:

    1. We lose OEL.

    2. We lose Myers

    3. We have a better farm team.

Our prospect cupboard looks like we've been a contender for a decade, not like a team that hasn't earned a playoff game in a decade.

I like the Hronek trade. We desperately need right D and D with skills.

Everyone liked the Schmidt trade too, until he got here, didn't gel and played his way right out of here.  Until we see Hronek play here I'm reserving judgement on the trade.  Initially I don't like it because we have a horrible prospect pool and this is a draft year to fill the cupboards.

It feels like we have another impatient front office who's mandate is make the playoffs, future be damned.
