@coastal.view you can't *really* use that argument of what if it was your sister, mother, daughter etc, since it's an unfair comparison.

What I mean is, when we read these stories and are expected to come up with an objective opinion we don't actually KNOW these people. We don't know what kind of individuals they are, what their personalities are, their flaws or their character. We don't know their motivations behind what they do. When you unfairly compare to a loved one, of course you're going to defend your loved ones because you KNOW them.

Especially when it comes to Hollywood and show business, everything in some way or another is blown out of proportion to where the truth is somewhere in the middle of the two sides.

I'm not disputing the Spacey crap, since I've informed myself with the latest news, but this Takei allegation is so wildly out of character for George, combined with the boiler plate recollection of the story just seems... forced.

so don't try to reach any objective opinion

you are in no position to do so

      just keep an open mind

and let those who need to speak

don't shut them down or judge them

competent people will be assessing their claims

      not online wanna be judges/asseors

@coastal.view I'm going to have to respectfully disagree. Critical thinking, and formulating ones own opinion based on objectivity is how you validate your perspective on the world. If everyone just took everything at face value, there would be no accountability among the general populace.

If the objectivity you have formulated turns out wrong, then you have two choices. Remain ignorant and not learn from the cognitive biases you may have involuntarily added to the equation, or learn from the mistake, adjust your perspective and apply the newly gained information to future situations. It's how we learn and grow as individuals.

The other issue I have is with people treating all sexual assault allegation cases the same, they are not. Every single case if proven true will have universally common aspects which make these cases seem similar or the same, but until that is proven you cannot paint all sexual assault allegations the same.

If something is alleged to have happened, you support the victims by making them feel comfortable to come forward and name their attackers. My issue with these allegations that are coming out publicly is that they are bypassing the judicial process, the very same "competent people will be assessing their claims" as you say.

Outting these claims in public damages the fabric of what our society is supposed to be built upon, that being the Justice system will provide closure to victims of crimes and punishment to those who violate the law. You might say that these people go public because they don't trust the Justice system to do the right thing, but to that I would argue you can't reform the Justice system if it's not given a chance to reform in the light of recent developments.

I think we've seen progress in the case of Bill Cosby, yes the allegations came out publicly first, but they were acted upon judicially and were found to be rooted in truth. Just because precedent is set for something having successfully worked they way it shouldn't have been done does not mean every new instance must follow that precedent. What it means is that precedent holds new context for legal proceedings, so that the judicial process can improve as it pertains to that specific issue that has by and large been improperly handled by the courts.
