  1. I haven’t looked for a couple years but it used to always be in the range of 13 or more. Irwin just adds another guy in that 7-13 tier and is about as cheap as you can get. He is probably an upgrade on Brisebois honestly.
  2. This is the first time in years we will have an average NHL D core. There are two ratings I can give the offseason to this point (who knows…. Something magical can still happen and there is a secondary trade market that we may be able to move cap out). Given the limitations and cap space, I give them a B+. On paper the team has gone from a bottom feeder to one that should be in the mix for one of the last playoffs spots. That is their stated goal and they accomplished what they apparently wanted. In the larger context, it drops to a C- though for me. None of the signings are real difference makers and moving the team towards being a real contender. We will be asking all these guys to take a step up and play bigger roles on our team. That regularly doesn’t work. We paid a big premium of future competitiveness with the OEL buyout for the sake of this year, and no one will have this team as a legitimate contender in their season previews. Teams with cap space made out really well with value signings that were just out of our price range. If Soucey and Hronek can be a shot suppressing pairing that plays well for 22 all purpose minutes a game, that probably adds 10 points to our season total just in itself. If Blueger and Mikheyev can be a good PK unit that we haven’t had, that could be a godsend to the team compared with the last few years. If Ian Cole can keep his head above water alongside Hughes… that will help incrementally.
  3. Did you bother to look at the cap hit he signed for? It limits the team in no way at all. They could sign ten of these guys and have no cap implications. People keep explaining this to you and not sure how it isn’t computing. There isn’t a limited amount of cash we can spend, there is limited cap space. This has nothing to do with the latter as it is well below what can be buried. It actually helps the cap Vs. Paying a kid a couple hundred grand more to sit on the bench.
  4. Who said they were getting younger? They have said they want to win now. This lets a guy like Hirose get a lot of reps in the minors rather than being rushed into the big league. Winning franchises don’t put kids in a position to fail. If a kid shows off amazingly in camp and shows he is ready, then Irwin gets waived with no cap implications. If they show they need to play a lot of minutes in the minors, you now have a ready made veteran.
  5. This is a “we want our young guys to develop in the minors instead of sitting on the bench” move. Irwin is a solid, dependable veteran who will be a perfect 7-8 injury replacement.
  6. Myers is definitely a good 3rd pairing guy. His entire career has been him being high end in limited minutes and starting to flail if you ask too much of him. This could put him in a position to succeed if he stays.
  7. He can play both, but so can Cole who played a lot as a RD on a top pairing. I would probably try Cole with Hughes and see if you can turn Soucey-Hronek into an all around minute munching match up pairing. Soucey is kind of the key to how things go for the team. This is a big jump in expectations for him, if he can do it… that pairing could take so much pressure off Hughes it would have a big ripple effect. Also, how is Demko with an average defence in front of him rather than a dog’s breakfast. Can the forwards suddenly be freed up because they don’t have to protect a bad defence? Can the new D get the pick up ice better? This is going to be interesting. We are asking a lot more of Cole/Soucey/Blueger than their previous teams were.
  8. I am going to say, watching TSN… they are just crap with their coverage this year. They hadn’t even mentioned any Canucks signings. Friedman is breaking all the signings.
  9. Cole actually played a lot of minutes on the top right pairing, so I would imagine he is the Hughes partner now. The good thing about any partner for Hughes is he makes it easier for them and they will play more limited minutes as they won’t be on the PP with him.

  13. Good place holder, helps out Hronek in a position to succeed as a steady 2nd pairing. If we are terrible again, he will be pretty valuable as a trade chip at the deadline.
  14. There is the bargain basement bet. Decent signing, is a place holder and isn’t going to change the fortunes of the team.
  15. Would have been a good target. Not at that price though. He is a 3rd pairing guy, so those guys should be $2 million and no more than 2 years.
  16. I shouldn’t have been drinking my tea when reading this as I snorted and spit it all over my shirt. :D Bedard was always the golden prize, but it was about getting one of those top three centres. That would have changed the entire course of the team. We then have a ready made cheap 2C so could easily have let Miller go and reallocate that money to the defence.
  17. For a 7-8 guy, sure. Super popular guy, bleeds Canucks. When we let him go we were hoping to upgrade…. we only got worse. He, Edler, and Tanev were our best shot suppressors and when they left everything fell apart. Not sure if he can replicate that level of play again. No risk as it will be less than can be buried in the minors.
  18. OEL as a PP specialist who isn’t relied on to be a minute munching shut down D is a much better player. He will be fine there playing 15 minutes a night in an offensive role.
  19. If we did a mix of decent and bargain bin shopping that would be good. Cole, Soucy, Foote, Tryamkin, Simon Benoit, Fischer… I don’t see us affording O’Reilly, but if there really is a deal for Myers from San Jose that can free up more money that would be a tidy little bit of work. Kuzmenko-Petterson-Beauvillier Garland-Miller-Boeser Mikheyev-O’Reilly-Podkolzin Joshua-Aman-Fischer Comptois Hughes-Cole Soucy-Hronek Tryamkin-Juulsen Simon Benoit-Foote Demko Silovs Barring something unfortunate, that is a team that would be in the mix for a playoff spot. I would be surprised if it came together that way though.
  20. Yes, of course it is the flat cap. That is why teams had to be worried about arb awards, just like we could never have signed Bear even injury free. He is a player with a $2.2 QO, but could easily get an arbitration award over $3 million. Teams aren't allowed to walk away from those middle dollar arbitration awards. In the Canucks case, it would handcuff them from any moves as they would have to assume the worst in an arbitration and not spend that money until mid to late summer when they find out what Bear costs. For players, it is risk reward. They become UFAs really young so increase their options... but it is a flat cap world so may not get paid anyways. They can sign one year cheap deals and still be UFAs really early in their careers when there is more money in the system. I can expect a lot of these RFAs to pick a team with the most opportunity and sign one year deals so they can try to cash in next year. Thankfully the Canucks are a team with opportunity, especially on defence. Cal Foote could reasonably expect to get regular minutes as a Canuck. He would probably even get an audition with Hughes, but at worst be a #7 guy who plays 50 games due to injuries even if we can't move Myers. He isn't getting than chance with Tampa.
  21. What? These are are all around that 23-25 age and I said they had upside. Not a lot of 28 year olds suddenly bloom into something spectacular. The average NHL career is 4.5 years... not a lot of 28 and 30 year olds who were fringe guys their entire careers suddenly bloom into high end players
  22. Christian Fisher is a gritty, big RW penalty killer who can provide secondary scoring. Great pick up for our bottom six. Lots of these names are upgrades at the bottom of our roster, and if you can convince them that they will get more opportunity with us as a bad team we might have a chance on getting them.
