Therefore they can draft 1st or 2nd or 8th 9th 10th 11th or 12th. 3rd to 7th isn't possible in this scenario. So being specific. Of course if you are drafting 1st you take Bedard not Michkov. If you draft 2nd you likely take Fantilli not Michkov. But if you draft 8th to 12th ya maybe you take a chance on him if he is available.

My guess, is that management wants Hronek to pair with OEL next year. They will be hoping for an Erik Karlsson style resurgence in OEL so that they can trade him for the final 3 years of his contract. (It's a copycat league afterall - and if OEL has a resurgence he might listen to offers if they come). If that doesn't work OEL probably gets bought out at June 15, 2024.

Hronek might be QH partner for years to come - or not. Depends how they work together. If not then Hronek is on the second pairing and we are still looking to pair up QH. Having 2 top puck moving D on the first and second D lines is not awful.

Quinn Hughes will be 24 in the fall. Drafting an 18 year old this year is never going to be the solution for a partner for him. Age doesn't match up. By the time the new guy makes the team Quinn will be in the final year of his contract. QH future partner is somebody who is 22 to 27 years old right now.
