  1. Well yeah... I didn't say it was the Smith maneuver, I just said similar. Similar in the sense that he is foregoing paying down the money owe (quicker) and instead seeking better returns elsewhere. Alternatively, he can choose to have a readvanceable mortgage to utilize, but that's another can of worms.
  2. Bo is just 2-3 years younger than Pearson. If Pearson is over the hill, then Horvat isn't that far behind him.
  3. What you're proposing is similar to the Smith Maneuver. It's more of hassle (paperwork, taxes), but does help you build equity quicker. As long as you are really discipline, it's not a bad option to choose. This is assuming you are really discipline and you're the type that goes, "Tax refund? That's going into my investment accounts" and not one of those "Tax refunds?! Woo-hoo! Las Vegas here I come! Hookers and blow!"
  4. Maybe Antoine Vermette. Signed with Phoenix, then traded to the Blackhawks in his final season, then he re-signed with the Coyotes in the off-season.
  5. I always laugh when people use the TML as some model for rebuild. Gifted a #1 overall pick and having a former first overall #1 centre only wanting to sign with your team at slightly below market value.... somehow took skills, lol.
  6. In the perfect world.... he's traded for a king's ransom, then he re-signs with the Canucks below market price.
  7. Maybe not a conspiracy per se, but luck does play a huge role in terms of rebuilding via the draft. I think the TML and the Canucks had just 1 different number for the 2016 draft.... it could have easily been Vancouver with Auston Matthews and then Toronto with Jake Virtanen. Everyone then would be claiming how GMJB is a genius at rebuilding the Canucks. Kind of like how someone asked Burke if the Pittsburgh rebuild was the model the follow... which he then replied that the Pens got lucky with winning the lotto for a generational player.
  8. The "problem" with the last 7 years is the first couple of years of Benning's regime, the Canucks were still supposed to be playoff teams. When GMJB arrived, the Canucks were just 2 years removed from their 2nd Presidents Trophy. They still had good pieces and theoretically a couple of pieces from making another run or two.... hence the moves to add pieces. Once the rebuild mode was on... the Canucks were pretty much screwed over for 2-3 drafts. While the Canucks still got arguably the best players in both the 17 and 18 drafts, better draft position could have been leveraged or change the outcome of the 2016 draft completely.
  9. Hopefully the Canucks will just let him keep playing until he himself wants to retire, assuming the contract is reasonable. I don't mind if he does what Linden did, just took a league minimum contract and played in a depth/leadership role.
  10. My bad... my toddler was messing with the comp. To continue.... Are certain geographical locations, ethnic group or area with certain cultural norms becomes an unending feedback loop? That the rich gets richer and poor gets poorer. High IQ location gains more leverage and the poorer IQ location does worse and worse as times goes by. North America is relatively a blank slate compared to other countries in the world, but even different cultural/ethnic groups still have different social, educational, economical outcomes. Lots of people with nothing more than the clothing on their backs and still able to survive and thrive, some more so than others. Plus with changing age demographics too. That poorer places are most of the planet's population growth, ever more stretching limited local resources. More prosperous places with lower birth rates with resources being more concentrated.
  11. The whole nature versus nurture. It's true that cultural norms may affect educational and intellectual potential... but then it goes to a chicken vs egg argument. Are Asians
  12. I'm no expert when it comes to IQ scores.... but isn't it all just relative? I mean if if everyone's IQ increased by like 30 points, wouldn't the average IQ suddenly be 130? Or just the 130 be the new median and thus people will re-use 100 for simplicity? Eugenics.... As controversial as it sounds, there are studies done by many researchers who studies IQ across ethnic groups and found there are relatively vast degree of differences between them. Visually something akin to this: Not to say those in group A or group B don't have smart successful people or cannot compete with C's... since hard work will beat skills if skills doesn't work hard... but if intelligence is more or less a genetic trait, are humans getting smarter? It seems that only way to equal the playing field is to head into genetic engineering or more bio-technological infusing.
  13. I worry about players' health going forward. I think there some many UFC fighters that caught and recovered from Covid, but some residual damage were detected in their lungs, hearts, etc.
  14. I always felt that "Real" art are pieces that moves you, that you can feel your heart skipping a beat like a first kiss or welcoming your baby to the world. Your soul is filled with awe and grandeur, or your mind noticing slight nuances and intricacies.... all coming to you naturally and without any of it needed to be explained to you I know videos from PragerU isn't for some folks... but this video from an actual artist who also teaches art does have validity.
  15. Social media wouldn't have as much power if companies and people just stopped kowtowing to it. Too many sponsors or whatever will go along with cancelling someone due to "reasons", and it just makes it easier to keep going. Time for people and companies to go grow a pair and just go, "LOL, I don't give a #### about your mob mentality complaints. Don't wanna support us/me anymore, well, don't let the door hit your ### on the way out..."
  16. I think I've seen this before. So sad that the powers that be are more concerned about protecting whoever the perps were rather than pursuing justice. Meanwhile they throw the parents under the bus.
  17. The problem with the WHO team heading to China as that the trip was as in-depth as a school field trip.
  18. RIP Ghislaine. She must have been battling a lot of personal demons to shoot herself in back of the head twice, while being hung, set on fire and falling off a tall building. /s
  19. Kids have an uncanny ability to just disappear at time. There are times when I'm going clothes shopping and my little 3 y/o just ducks in and somehow hides between the clothing racks and stuff. Suddenly as a parent you've been forcibly recruited into a game of hide and seek... and you don't even know it. As for this particular case, I can't pass judgement since there is currently insufficient details. That being said, I've watched Missing 411 enough that I never want to go into the wilderness with my kids.
  20. Seems a tad high for someone who has not even completed a full season in the NHL. I would have assuming it would be maybe $4.5/per. That being said, should revenue and cap increase post-covid, it will eventually be a good deal.
  21. So there's no racism then. Assuming we are working with the premises that minorities are given unfair treatment, you would see Whites pulling out on top in terms of health, wealth and opportunities. Instead you have a mosaic of results.... Asians with higher income and long lifespan, Latinos with lower income but high age expectancy, Blacks and Indigenous with lower score for both and then Whites in the middle. Asians, Jews and Latinos back in the days suffered the same injustice and bigotry as the Indigenous and Blacks.... yet each group as a whole went on separate trajectories. Are TPTB are selectively racist now? Why is that Asians have been so successful that there actual racist policies in place in certain fields to allow others a better chance of getting in? Why those who identifies as Jews are disproportionally ending up in high income jobs? I mean Jews are regularly targeted by a plethora of religious and cultural groups throughout history and even today. Why do Latinos have high lifespans even though their incomes are less? I hate to sound bigoted, but not all cultures are equal when it comes to competing in the modern global economy. When you think of what job a stereotypical Asian person would get, what would it be? A doctor, a lawyer, an engineer, or an accountant. From most people I know.... almost everyone is in a variant of each field. What's the Jewish stereotype.... lawyer, doctor, banker. Friend I know how are Jewish.... they're pretty much in a variant of those jobs. Suffice to say, a bachelor degree is a requirement, many with post-grad studies on top. I have very few friends who are Asian that don't have a degree. Now think of Black culture, what do you think Black kids are aspiring to be when they grow up? Basketball player, rappers, etc. The prevalence of gang, thug culture is corrupting those youths. I rarely have friends who are Black nowadays (drifted apart). Those I went to school with.... they are started dressing, talking, acting like the rappers you see on MTV back in the days. Trying to be all ghetto and speaking in ebonics... like dude, we're from the same the run-of-the-mill East Vancouver neighbourhood with all those Vancouver Specials.... we didn't grow up in Compton. Then it also comes down to financial literacy. Some cultures do better than others. Renting as an Asian is near blasphemy. For many in the Asian community.... getting a degree and mortgage for a home is almost a requirement before getting married. My White friends on the other hand are generally renters, regardless of their income. My Asians friends, either owning a place or living with parents. Now is this racism? Or just better foresight and planning to ensure success for future generations? Using the racism is easy because it's used externally. It's simpler to blame others for any issues. Very easy to go, "we're poor because they stole from us", "they have more because it's unfair". It's much harder to accept that faults and errors are actually from within, that most of society's ills (especially in develop countries) are from yourselves and your own groups. Now are there actually racist and bigoted people out there, of course.... there will always be donkey-holes out there using whatever excuse to harm others, but as for some grand conspiracy to hinder others.... it's 2021, not 1921. Using past grievances is irrelevant.
