  1. My family originated from the Cantonese speaking area.... I can't stand Mainlanders. My circle are also mostly Cantonese-Canadian.... also can't stand those recently from China. Heck, my own dad can't stand Mainlanders... and he's from China, lol. He always saying whenever there's pro-CCP/China on the radio, TV, news or whatever.... "If you love China so much, get out of Canada" There is a huge divide in terms of mannerism, cultural norms, etc. Many 2nd/3rd/4th+ generation CBC have different manners and cultural values because they fled/left China with them. Mainlanders are from a China that did away with all traditional manners and values during Mao's time, thus they exercise some weird bastardized version of it. Plus CBC (and parents) identifies as Canadian. Lots of Mainlanders just simply view themselves as Chinese citizens who just happens to live here... usually refusing to assimilate. There's a reason I personally barely have any friends from the Mainland... and I used to hang out and party a lot in the international student scenes too. Lots of Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, etc, friends.... but Mainlanders tends to keep to themselves. As a CBC and as someone who can still vaguely remember Expo86.... the most racism I've ever encountered were from Chinese Mainlanders. The most I ever get from non-Asians would be, "Oh hey, do you speak Chinese?" or that one random guy yelling at an Asian driver, "You ****ing Oriental!" and then he immediately said to me, "Sorry dude, I don't mean you", just because I was within the vicinity.
  2. A healthy lifestyle and diet plays way bigger role than anything. Obvious if you're wealthier you can afford healthier food and have more free time to exercise, etc.... but where is the racism? Is it anti-racism that is allowing Latinos and Asians to outlive their white/black/indigenous counterparts? Or maybe different cultural cuisine that is playing a bigger role here? The Latino ethnic group tends to be economically disadvantaged compared to Whites.... but their life expectancy is higher. In Japan, their poor still have higher life expectancy than those in North America. Is that because of the lack of racism in one location? Or maybe the average Japanese diet is by far way healthier than in Canada or US? When you think of the average "Canadian" meal, what do you think of? Steak and potatoes? Burgers? Pasta? Those are hardly fitness gurus will recommend when dieting. Now what is the average meal for those who are Latino? The Chinese, Japanese, Koreans.... etc. It makes good headline to say racism is a major cause, but it goes back to cultural values. Why is that Asian consistently do better in every single metric than every other ethnic group (save for Jews and certain immigrants from Africa)? What makes Asians the "exception"? I would say the majority of Asians living here (exception of more recent immigrants) fled their traditional home country in one form or another. How many were those who fled Vietnam during the war? How many fled China during many conflicts and upheavals the past centuries? Immigrants from other equally impoverished East and SE Asian countries with civil conflicts, poverty, dictatorships, etc? And now those same people and their descendants (who also faced the bigotries of history) are more prosperous than the "standard" Whites. If there is some racism in play, they're definitely doing it wrong. The biggest oppressor for each ethnic groups aren't the "ruling class" or "white" or whatever.... it's their own ethnic groups.
  3. I am assuming this numbers would be life expectancy? Not really a racism thing... just different genetic history, diet, socio-economic reasons, etc. If racism is really playing a huge role, then there must be some pro-Asian conspiracy as expected life expectancy is way above even Whites. Is there a statute of limitations for "making amends"? I mean should we go back year by and year have the modern day Italians apologize to the country of Tunisia for sacking Carthage? History is just successive events occurring after other events....
  4. As much as I wish the Canucks will pick up Gostisbehere.... maybe too many chefs in the kitchen? It would be hard for him to put up points if he gets minimal PP time. Unless the Canucks really split into 2 very strong PP units, like have Horvat running the 2nd PP unit or something. Not sure how the Canucks can fit him into the regular lineup unless some team is willing to pay a premium to take a defenseman from the Canucks.
  5. IMO, I think Asians usually don't care about such frivolous gestures. Ever noticed that Asians are rarely in the forefront of cancel culture, or those anti-whatever movements? Many Asians (especially our parents, grandparents, etc) has suffered through experiences way worst than anything most Canadian or American has gone through. A statistically insignificant amount of police brutality and some form of bigotry against minorities in US and Canada? Please.... that's nothing compared to total warfare where cities are completely annihilated, starvation/famine to a point where you see people dropping dead or forced to eat rodents for survival, warfare in hellish conditions, subjected to state policing or other paramilitary organizations or mass surveillance which makes the worst American police seems like boy scouts. Among my circle and peers.... anytime the topic of cancel culture, faux outrage, or whatever supposed micro-aggression/racism or whatever.... we just roll our eyes and wonder what is this world coming to. It just seems to me that some ethnic/cultural groups are more concerned about living their own lives to the fullest rather than trying to police others on how to life their lives.
  6. The problem is that many seems to take any slightest offense as some sort of personal insult that can only repaid in blood. It's like the "I don't give a ####!" is a lost art or something.
  7. As an ethnic Asian.... I really don't give a damn.
  8. I wonder how much does his decline relates to his history with concussions. His rise to be the next crop of up-and-coming superstars were delayed with multiple head injuries. Considering the Canucks are already up against the cap, it is troublesome to constantly needing to juggle $9 million should he be forced to LTIR a la Ferland. Any info on whether his salary is covered by insurance if he goes on LTIR? Having an owner forking over cash can potentially handcuff a GM when making deals.
  9. Seems like a good buying opportunity once the dust settles.
  10. I believe he was starting to finish his checks more.... but he's like the friendly giant, his hits weren't punishing. I do remember watching games where Gaunce laid players out onto the ice, but they were more "hard shoves" rather than anything where you go, "Woah! Watch out!". That being said, Jake Virtanen is hardly a "truculent" player himself. Once in a while he does have a big hit here and there, but hardly the physical beast he was back in junior. In any case, the point I'm making isn't that Gaunce is the better player or whatever, just pointing out that if you're drafted by the current management, you will have more leeway than if you were draft from a different GM.
  11. What did he over-leverage on? Shorting GME recently? lol
  12. Dude here, lol. Just a picture of my type of "dream girl".... but don't tell my wife that....
  13. WeWork with a definite agreement with a SPAC (BOWX) I never short stocks, but I'm very very tempted to short this after the ticker change.
  14. Tell me about it. Anytime I see people who have been here longer than China and yet they still drink the CCP kool-aid. Usually they use the faux-ethnic nationalism as some justification for being pro-CCP or something. It drives me crazy.... I know being Canadian means you're allowed to have differing opinions, but when your opinion is 180 degrees from what Canada represents... what are you doing in Canada anyways? Canadians born here or born abroad needs to really ask themselves what it means to be Canadian. Is it just a passport or is it an ideal? When people plead their allegiance when getting their citizenship, it means they believe in Canada, the Charter of Rights and Freedom, etc.... if it's just lip service... maybe they should be denied citizenship. Any time anyone asks me "Are you Chinese?" my answer.... "No, I am ethnically Chinese, but I'm 100% Canadian".
  15. Nothing wrong with the oil sector. There will also be a demand for hydrocarbon for decades and maybe even centuries to come, unless the average person and environmentalists actually realizes that nuclear power is essential going forward. Of course.... just never wise to place all your eggs in one basket by just focusing on a single industry.
  16. Boeser + Pettersson reminds me of Daniel + Henrik. The chemistry can be unreal at time. Yet, I definitely remember when during their prime, Henrik played without Daniel (injured) and he took his game to the next level since he also has to be the shooter as well as the passer. When Daniel had his Art Ross season, he was starting to drive the play more rather than just waiting for Henrik to make his move. While I dislike Elias being out due to injuries, this almost seems like it is allowing Brock to spread his wings more. I hope that going forward they will just have Brock with Horvat instead of with Pettersson.
  17. SPACs wouldn't be so popular if regular folks can actually got in on IPOs. Nowadays if there's a company listing, it's always the large firms that gets first crack at them. The best retail investors can do is buy them on the secondary market, after the large financial firms has already made their 50-200% gains.
  18. Horvat isn't a fringe player, Gaunce is. Virtanen is barely above a fringe player now. Think of how many opportunities JV received and how many opportunities Brendan received. Effort, discipline and defensive reliability has never been an issue with Gaunce. How often has many kept harping about Jake's compete level, his inability to read the play, how he's rarely ever on the ice for key situations? If it's based on merit, Brendan definitely got the short-end of it. Gaunce's ceiling and skill level is arguably lower than Jake's, but if Gaunce was acquired or drafted by Benning, he would have been given a longer leash.
  19. If JV wasn't a Benning pick, he would have been gone long ago. Remember Brendan Gaunce? A late 1st rounder, got size, defensively reliable and with better stats in the AHL compared to Virtanen, thus should have earned a spot on the Canucks more than Jake. Probably could have easily been retained as a 4th line winger/centre since he already know the Canucks system. But he was a Gillis pick, thus when he reached RFA, he was gone. Not saying his career would have been better or whatever, but when you're a prospect from the previous regime, you have minimal leeway.
  20. As someone who almost always vote Conservatives.... The CPC is like the guy in the brown suit: Doesn't even matter what policies it has, since politics has basically become all about branding. JT has a good marketing/publicity teams, hence he used to do those "random" photoshoots.... like the time he was jogging without his security detail and apparently with his photographer... at night along the seawall... right, lol. Yet many voters were still bamboozeled by it. He just need to appear to be young, hip and "with it" and thus he will get a huge voter base without even venturing into actual issues. As for Erin O'Toole.... at first I was like, nice a woman to go head-to-head... oh wait, Erin's a dude? An older and overweight dude?
  21. Don't you see what GMJB is doing? Holtby, Beagle, Schmidt, and now Boyd..... he's making a play for Ovechkin in the off-season!
  22. As weird as it sounds, it will depend on how the Canucks loses. If they only loses the games they will lose in OT/SO, it will greatly increase their chances.
