  1. So far not a very good start at pre season play. last week I heard Podolzkins team had stopped training because 9 players had tested positive, and now this report of 20 players reporting positive on Avangard Omsk. Pasted from SN. KHL club Avangard Omsk records 20 positive COVID-19 tests Associated PressJuly 21, 2020, 10:38 AM A Russian team playing in the Kontinental Hockey League has withdrawn from a pre-season tournament after 20 people from the club tested positive for the coronavirus. Avangard Omsk general manager Alexei Volkov says the positive tests come from players and members of team staff who were tested during training camp. Volkov adds that the people are in isolation and that most don’t have obvious symptoms. Avangard was scheduled to play in a pre-season tournament from Aug. 4-9 in Sochi. The last KHL season was cut short midway through the playoffs when the coronavirus pandemic made international travel difficult. The KHL is aiming to start the new season on Sept. 2 and expects to finalize the calendar after a board meeting scheduled for next week.
  2. With the announcement that the salary cap could remain around the current 81.5 million for the next 3 seasons a lot of teams will be hurting if this ends up happening, how do you guys feel canucks will work around this?
  3. AHL cancels rest of regular season, playoffs due to COVID-19 pandemic.
  4. I just thought it was a nice, positive story and a “first” that’s long overdue and well worth acknowledging. I think it’s great to see the increasing female representation in (men’s) hockey (and other major sports), especially in recent years. I don’t have much else to say. Just figured I’d start a thread and see if it goes anywhere. Personally, I’m pretty stoked whenever I see women, people of colour, LGBTQ folks, and other under represented groups finally getting a seat at the table. Also cool that someone so young (she’s only 31) is stepping into a GM role for a major professional team.

  7. Hope this is not old news, just saw an article in a newsletter from the publication Fast Company. Below is the first paragraph of that story for information. If interested you can read the full story at Fast Company's Compass newsletter. Please forgive this techno-illiterate for not attaching a direct link to the published article. Free public transit, what a concept. In 2021, Seattle will have a new hockey team. And when hockey fans head to a game at the new arena where the team will play, they could choose to sit in some traffic on the freeway and pay for parking downtown, or they could hop on a bus or light rail—completely free of charge. NHL Seattle (the team doesn’t have a name yet) will be the third sports franchise in the country to offer free public transit to those going to games, as a way to ease traffic congestion in the city, increase access for fans, and do something good for the environment.

  10. IIHF president Rene Fasel has set a deadline for the NHL to decide whether or not the league will participate in the 2022 Winter Olympics in Beijing. Speaking at the closing press conference at the world juniors Sunday, Fasel said he needs a decision from commissioner Gary Bettman by the end of August, according to The Canadian Press. "We would like to have a decision as early as possible if they're coming to Beijing - 'Yes' or 'No,"' Fasel said. "In Pyeongchang, there was a late 'No.' Especially the North American teams, U.S. and Canada, had some problems to find the players and to build up a good team." The NHL informed the IIHF that it wouldn't be participating in the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang 10 months prior to the event. It marked the first time since 1998 that the league didn't send its players to the Winter Games. In November, Bettman remained resistant to the idea of sending players to the Olympics, saying participation is "incredibly disruptive" to the NHL season. However, Fasel believes there's no greater stage for the game of hockey. "The first mission is to promote the game of ice hockey," Fasel said. "The Olympic Games is the unique platform we can use, especially in Asia, with the best on best. Asia is two-thirds of the population. I consider Gary a smart person. "He's smart. At the end, he will come ... I hope." There hasn't been a best-on-best international hockey tournament since the World Cup in 2016. The NHL said in December that a proposed World Cup in 2021 won't work, but the league is aiming to hold one in 2024.
