Typical union mentality. Players want long term contracts so that they don't have to prove that they are worth it game in and game out, year after year. Sign a 10 year contract and float around the ice like they are in Icecapades. IMHO, the contracts should be 1 year max. How the player performs for that contract determines whether he will get resigned and for how much.
vanfan73, If your pay was 100% incentive based, why would you ever pass the puck to a teammate? A team full of players paid that way might win 15% of it's games and would play in front of empty rinks. The only incentive worth paying a bonus for is winning.

They should make it like the NFL and let teams cut guys who are not playing to standards. Only a portion of the contract should be guaranteed. It's ridiculous in a contact sport to have guaranteed contracts over 5 years.
