Ok, here's the deal, as far as I know, the Moose are not owned by the Canucks. The Canucks maintain the affiliation with them so that their younger players can be conditioned right? So the Canucks get a team for their younger players to play on when there's no room on the Canucks, and the Moose get a bunch of young players to help their team succeed. Success is the key word there.
If they could maintain good players without having to be affiliated with the Canucks, don't you think they would? That would mean that they wouldn't lose their best players whenever someone from Vancouver got injured or wasn't playing well. The Moose have an owner and a GM who probably wouldn't be too happy if they had to play the younger players who needed the ice time in order to develope over the older players who deserved to be out there. And same with the coach, I mean he's not an idiot. Anyone who's ever played minor hockey knows that if you're playing bad you'll usually get less ice time, and if you're playing good you'll get more. I think it's pretty naive to assume that a coach would give a younger, less talented player more ice time than a veteran who actually does well.

There is another benefit for the Moose as well. The Canuck players loaned to the Moose are paid by the Canucks. This of course makes operating an AHL team much more economically feasible. The Canucks and Moose have a contract which specifies how many Canuck prospects are to be on the Moose roster, and how many veteran minor leaguers (ie Jaffray) the Moose can carry.

I listened to the game last night and it really was a good experience. The commentators are great, very similar to Tom and Shorty.
Also there was an interview with one of Raymond's assistant coaches at UMD (Lee Davidson I believe) and he had nothing but good things to say. He noted that one of Mason's biggest challenge will be the strength factor of moving to pro hockey. He also noted Mason being a great playmaker while he does still have a great shot.

He wouldn't leave early and turn pro if he was injuried. Arneil if fussy with his players, he'll enter the line-up when you don't expected.

Thanks to mr7 for the sig
