Canucks Sign Forward Mason Raymond to Pro Contract
Tue. Mar 27, 2007

Vancouver, B.C. - Vancouver Canucks Senior Vice-President and General Manager Dave Nonis announced today that the Canucks have signed left winger Mason Raymond. In keeping with club policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Raymond, 21, signed his first pro contract after being selected by Vancouver in the second round, 51st overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft. He played in two games with the Manitoba Moose of the AHL this season after signing an amateur try-out with the Moose on March 19, 2007, registering two points (1-1-2).

The 6’1”, 185 lbs. native of Cochrane, Alberta has appeared in 39 games this season with the University of Minnesota-Duluth of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, where he led the team in scoring with 46 points (14-32-46) and 45 penalty minutes. Raymond ranked 11th in NCAA points, fifth in NCAA assists and second in WCHA power play goals. For his accomplishments, he was named to the 2007 WCHA All-Academic Team, a WCHA First Team All-Star and a WCHA Offensive Player of the Week (for the weeks of Jan. 9 and Feb. 27 of 2007).

One year prior, Raymond joined the University of Minnesota-Duluth for his first season, recording 28 points (11-17-28) and 30 penalty minutes in 40 games and was named to the 2005-06 WCHA All-Rookie Team. Raymond had previously played two seasons for the Camrose Kodiaks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League, where he racked up 144 points (68-76-144) over 112 games leading the Kodiaks to two consecutive Dave Duchak Trophies for Regular Season Champions.

Raymond also appeared in 15 playoff games with the Kodiaks in 2004-05, recording 20 points (8-12-20), leading the team to a Doyle Cup Championship and a berth at the Royal Bank Cup Championships. He also won the Alberta Old Time Hockey Players Trophy for Most Valuable Player in 2004-05.

That's good to hear. :D

So, just want to make sure, does this mean we can call him up anytime, even this season? How will it affect his UFA status if we call him up? :?

It wont do anything.

He wont be able to play more than 10 playoff games.

His UFA would be unaffected.

is there a reason that Laliberte wasn't ever signed by the canucks? or did they just kind of forget about him while he was in college?

8) Sweet. Would it be harder for a 21-22 year old to win? Assuming he scores about 80 points?
