Watch for Grabner to dress in one of the final games this weekend that will be TELEVISED on SPAC.

We will be able to watch Hansen, Edler, Grabner, Raymond, (Maybe even Rahimi/Schnieder).

I have a question. How is it that Rahimi can come over now yet Shirokov cannot. Is there a difference in the Russian leagues and the other European leagues?

Interesting, considering they are playing against one of the best ECHL teams. The S. Kings finished the season with 76 points well Alaska finished with 105!. I think the thing that will help the S-Kings the most is that they were on something like an 8-game winning streal before the season ended.

Well, the big difference is that there is currently no transfer agreement between the Russian Super League and the NHL. Whether or not that prevents Shirikov from coming over and playing/hang out with the Moose, I can't say for certain, but I suspect that has something to do with it. Every other Euro league has signed the transfer agreement with the NHL except for the Russians.

Instead of just allowing players to leave the Euro club and come to the NHL (I'm sure there's some financial compensation in there but I suspect its a flat fee for any player), the Russian teams want to deal with the NHL teams on a case by case basis (ie, Malkin and Ovechkin would cost a lot more than say Shirikov and Koltsov). This is a purely financial reason where the Russian clubs want to gouge the NHL teams when their best players want to leave for the NHL.

This is why the Russian prospects aren't being drafted as highly over the past couple of years (and why we got Shirikov much later than he might otherwise have gone).

Yup, and I do believe that he was actually passed over (not drafted in his original eligible draft year)

The Victoria Salmon Kings proved they belong. The Salmon Kings' first playoff game in franchise history was also the first postseason victory in franchise history.

The ECHL National Conference seventh seed scored a stunning 3-2 upset over the No. 2 seed and defending Kelly Cup champion Alaska Aces here last night to take a 1-0 lead in their best-of-seven first-round series.

"We carried a lot of the play and it seems like they were just hanging on," said Alaska mentor and ECHL coach of the year Davis Payne. "It was a wake-up call and we have to come together awfully quickly. I'm sure Victoria feels right now that it can win the series."

But Alaska twice lost first games of series last spring in their march to the Kelly Cup. "We're not going to call Victoria a first round winner just yet," said Payne.

It was only Victoria's third win over Alaska in 12 games this season and just the fourth in the three-season and 32-game history of this rivalry. It couldn't have come at a more opportune time.

Victoria came into the contest with a nine-game winning streak to close out the regular season, while Alaska hadn't lost at home in the last 21 games at Sullivan Arena. Something had to give. It was the Aces.

It took, for one night at least, some of the swagger away from the Aces. The Aces entered the game with that quiet, confident glow of a champion. And no disrespect meant to the Salmon Kings, but the Aces simply cannot envision a universe where they don't advance out of the first round of the 2007 ECHL Kelly Cup playoffs. Being the defending champions gives you that air of invincibility, especially during the early rounds.

"Ours is a team of confidence and has been for the last three years," said veteran Aces forward Joe Talbot.

But Talbot and his mates didn't figure on a vastly improved Salmon Kings squad. Nor did the 3,713 noisy, cow-bell clanging fans.

The situation is completely different for the Vancouver Canucks-affiliate Salmon Kings, who finally made the Kelly Cup dance in their third season of existence. The first round IS a big deal.

"It's playoff hockey and we're all excited to be here," said Salmon Kings forward Ryan Wade. "This first game was really important for us in terms of confidence."

The Salmon Kings took it to the Aces in the first period and the pressure paid off when forward Milan Gajic's slapshot beat Alaska goaltender Derek Gustafson at 14:44. But the cagey Aces slowly began finding their feet and tied it 1-1 just 1:37 into the second period through Mike Scott on the short side. Victoria got that back later in the period on the power play with a Wes Goldie tip-in at 10:58. Another shot tipped in by Goldie made it 3-1 at 14:20 of the second period.

Matt Robinson brought the Aces to within one at 11:44 of the third period, but Victoria goaltender Julien Ellis was money the rest of the way making 14 third-period saves.
