Wild journey continues for Bourdon
Luc Bourdon is ready for the latest spin on the roller-coaster of emotions.
When it's all said and done, the 2006-07 season will go down as a wild ride for Bourdon, the 20-year-old defenceman who is available tonight when the Manitoba Moose continue the AHL Calder Cup playoffs against the Hamilton Bulldogs in the opening game of the best-of-seven North Division final.
Bourdon, the Canucks' first-round pick in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft, outlasted Patrick Coulombe for the final spot on the roster out of training camp and appeared in nine games before returning to junior hockey.
Although the demotion was tough to deal with at the time, Bourdon understands it was the best thing for him.
"Overall, I improved a lot," said Bourdon, who skated at Gateway SportsPlex for about 20 minutes with Moose assistant Brad Berry yesterday afternoon. "I had a chance to play on a good team and I had a big role too, so that's always good for the confidence."
Bourdon, a 6-2, 199-pounder from Shippagan, New Brunswick, Note: WTF did they states come from, Cape has him listed at 6"3 21. World Junior weight was 211 6"3.
....worked hard to improve his play in the defensive zone this season and the results have been noticeable.
"Being in the plus was my goal and I achieved that this year. It was really big for me," said Bourdon, who helped Canada win a gold medal at the 2006 and 2007 World Junior Hockey Championship. "I wasn't really looking at points, it was about taking care of my own zone. Some people say I don't hit as much as I used to but I don't put myself out of position anymore.
"At this level, I don't think my offensive impact is going to be as big as in junior. I don't want to try and do too much. It's not junior anymore, I just want to do what I do best." An ankle injury limited him to 36 regular season games, but Bourdon is feeling fully healthy and had two goals and 13 points in 16 playoff contests.
Bourdon was assigned to the Moose yesterday, since the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles were eliminated from the QMJHL playoffs on Tuesday after a Game 7 loss to Val d'Or.
Moose head coach Scott Arniel wasn't about to divulge his lineup but there's a good chance Bourdon will suit up for at least one of the games this weekend against the Bulldogs.
"The big thing about him is his size and his mobility. He has great feet on him and he likes to be physical and bang bodies," said Arniel, who had a chance to work with Bourdon during Canucks' rookie camp. "He's a competitive kid and he has all the tools."
