I'll be honest with you guys, I wanted a forward to be taken with our 33rd pick. We picked a defensive defenseman. I almsot know nothing about this kid.

My take on the Canucks draft this year...... Long....Deal with it kids.

Round #1:

Patrick White
1st Round

This draft was very unpredictable, this kid was rated at around #22 on some draft lists, and up to 40 or so on others. So unlike others are saying, he IS NOT a "complete off the wall pick". I really like this pick alot. Like I said in the other thread. IMO he will fly under the "Casual" Canuck prospect fan radar, (like Mason Raymond) and will be spending atleast 2 years at the University of Minnesota. The kid seems to have some offensive minded skills. He is a younger player in this years draft, born in 89, not 88. Hopefully he will be given an opportunity to get alot of minutes next year.

The only bad news is we won't see him in a Canuck training camp for atleast two of three years.

2nd Round- 33rd Pick

hummm, he was rated 28th at his mid-term ranking, so again so this shouldn't come as a OMGZ11111 whozzz TAylor ELLiNGtonzzzzzz

To be honest, I was alittle surprised in this pick though. I hope that Nonis picked this player because that his scouting staff felt that he was the best player/best for their organization. Not just because he was a BC born player.... and so on. I do laugh at the fact that people assume the Canucks are "stacked" in Defence prospects. Personally, I would have liked the Canucks to get an much more offensive D-man if they we're to take a D prospect with the 2nd round pick..... but whatever. The kid has solid size at 6" 200 pounds....... born on Halloween night

5th Round - 145th Pick
Charles-Antoine Messier

Nice to see the Nucks finally take another player from the QMJHL, I was beginning to wonder if they ever had any scouts at games in the QMJHL A small kid at 5'11" 178 lbs
Apperently is a quick skater with good offensive skills, A good player for the new Canuck brand with Grabby,Raymond, Hansen, and Friends. He is gifted with very good hands, but needs to bulid at strength and work on D-zone coverage. Not bad for the 145th overall pick, moving on.

Ilja Kablukov LW
146th Pick

I looked on the ISS Euro player list and couldn't find is name anywhere. Perhaps another late round steal like a Hansen? Good size for a Euro at 6"2 and only 19 years old. I have no infomation on this (Anyone else have info???)

I question Nonis in Co for thinking they had to pick these kids becuase they were from BC. Put up pretty solid numbers on the Everett Silvertips who played a tight, low scoring style of games, No?. Also put up a solid +19 on the year.

It's obvious that the Canucks staff did lean towards kids born in BC. Although, their is nothing wrong with that if they are what's best for the organization. Although we won't know for atleast another 4 years for a general idea on how the scouting staff did on this years draft. The only pick I can question at this time is Taylor Ellington, a defensive defenseman with the early 2nd round pick. If he was a offensive defenseman I would be ok with this pick, because I truly believe the Canucks lack in this area. Sure Bourdon and Edler should be able to put up some numbers, but I'm not sold on the idea that we need another defensive defenseman.

In Conclusion, I would have liked Gradin to find another off the wall pick, (again does anyone have any infomation on Ilja Kablukov if he was in fact rated at all throughout the year). Or is he another Edler/Rahimi out of nowhere pick. I would have liked to have another Euro as well, and perhaps an purely Offensive D-man. We definitely picked are share of Centre's with 3 so I'm happy with that. I really like are 1st round pick, although I do wish he did have better foot speed. I'm am happy for the most part.

Overall, pardon the sarcasm but I wonder if Nonis and friends all got together and said "Hey boys, we need two kids from Everett Silvertips, two from the USHL, something from the Q, and Gradin do you're magic again..... just alittle bizarre.

I think we did well this draft.We needed Center's and we got a few of them.

Patick White - from what i've read he has an amazing shot and is like Kesler but with a bigger offensive upside. I like this pick, the more I read about him the better this pick seems. Playing at UoM should be wonderful for his development.

Ellington - Adds to what I view is a good Defensive prospect pool. He is a stay-at-home like Rahimi, but has a different style of play and aggression.

Messier - is a Talented Speedy Center who is boom or bust to me. Either he will become nothing, or will be a late-round gem. put up good numbers on the 2nd line

Kablukov - If he becomes a 3rd Line Center I'll be happy. Described as a defensive specialist with alright skills, he could become a regular NHL'er. pretty big for a 19 year old as well.....maybe him and Shirokov will catch a plane together

Matson - Small guy at 5'10 165lbs, with a RH shot. Not much on him, but played a bit in the USHL. Maybe he was like White where he split time in the USHL and for his High School

Gendur - 49 points in 61 games for PrinceGeorge/Everett is pretty good IMO.(48 of the games he played for Everett) while playing on the second line. Gendur finished the season as a +20. He was born in 1987 and probably has a well-rounded 2 way game because of where he played

That Jim Sharrow kid we picked up(22 this year) is a Offensive D-Man. He apparently is an excellent skater with solid Offensive instincts. While hardly a prime prospect, he will likely be on the Moose this year. He has put up points at every level.

Never rated and didn't score a single point in 24 games in the Elite League (Ilya guy) Someone said he scored 12 points in 24 games in junior Russian Leagues but I can't back that up anywhwere

I haven't done alot of research on the two pick-up's yet. Took me a couple of hours to figure out all the crap that went down in the mourning. Good to hear the Sharrow kid being offensive... Jesse Schultz was a healthy scratch in alot of the Moose playoff games, and was really in Arniel's doghouse. I'm just glad I don't have to hear about how we should call up Brandon Reid or Schultz hopefully never again. Ever.

I really liked the Ryan Shannon pick-up. He played at BC with Cory during 2004-05

A former captain with Boston College, the 22-year-old needs to show he can consistently overcome his 5'9 stature if he hopes to have any NHL aspirations.

His size and speeb read Brandon Reid V.2 all over him. Although, we all know that the ducks basically played 3 lines all year long, and if in fact he was on the 4th line, getting 4 shifts a game their could be some potentially their. I'd like to see him, Kes, and Raymond on a line at training camp. That would be crazy fast.......perhaps a lack of finish though......

AV's system will be in Ryan favour, he will be given an bigger opportunity under AV's system. It's his spot to lose.

Im just so confused right now

I literally spent the entire day at work trying to think why we took Ellington and my mind is still drawing blanks

I'm not actually allowed to speak my mind, but i will say i am very saddened we didnt get a Center with our 33rd pick, Moller, Veilleux, Tyrell, Andersson were ALL available

Now, if Nonis had taken a RH d-man, i would have been ok with it, but the fact we now have 4 nhl-calibre prospects on one side, and zero on the other sends chills down my spine

I love the pick of White and Matson, as well as the 2 trades. It will be fun to cover a scoring player from the Q, but it will be tough to do much with Kablukov, a defensive forward playing in Russia is about as boring as you can get from my POV, that pick also mystified me. there were still some far better players available. And w/o the transfer agreement i doubt hell ever see a North American ice-sheet

Well, Nonis said in an interview that if there had been 5 players at the top of their list that were available they would have taken them even if they were all d-men

So it's obvious they were very high on Ellington and believed him to be the best available and were not drafting for position

Taylor Matson is committed to Minnesota next year, i think it';s time to ditch UMD and bgegin rooting for UM
