Canucks interested in two-way contract
by Tim Campbell, Winnipeg Free Press
ROCHESTER, N.Y. -- Manitoba Moose leading goalscorer Jason Jaffray may soon be closer to a career goal -- a chance to play in the NHL.
The agent for the undrafted 25-year-old forward, who has 29 goals and a trip to the AHL all-star game so far this season, has opened contract discussions with the Canucks at the NHL team's invitation.
Jaffray, who's on an AHL contract with the Moose, could well end up with a standard two-way NHL deal and officially become part of the Canucks organization.
"I'm obviously eager to get something done," Jaffray said Thursday. "Really, it's what I've worked for all season, a contract with them. After they released me before main training camp in the fall, I made that my motivation, to prove them wrong, for the first half of the season.
"But I've tried to keep this away from games, away from the ice and if it doesn't get done, it's not going to affect the way I play."
The Olds, Alta., native, a former ECHL rookie of the year, has played on the Moose's top line nearly the entire season and has delivered. He's also been noticed by more than a few NHL scouts and there had been rumblings that other organizations were ready to talk to him at the end of the current season.
The Canucks, too, appear ready to ready to recognize Jaffray's play, and Vancouver vice-president and assistant GM Steve Tambellini said Thursday that Jaffray has earned a look.
"We've had discussions; I'm comfortable saying that," Tambellini said. "He's a good prospect and he deserves a chance to be on an NHL contract. I think he has shown solid progress, done good things in Manitoba.
"It's (important) that he has a chance and that's all players are looking for, an opportunity."
If Jaffray and the Canucks can work out a deal -- it will most likely come after next week's trading deadlines -- he'd be the fifth Moose-contracted player to be signed by the NHL team in the last two years, with Alex Burrows, Josh Green, Rick Rypien and Patrick Coulombe before him.

Defensive prospect Daniel Rahimi closed out the regular season with a +4 outing in Bjorkloven's 4-1 win at Huddinge.
Despite being on the ice for all four of his team's goals, he didn't manage a point and so his last appearance on the score sheet still dates back to December 1st.
Rahimi finished the regular season with no goal and two assists in 33 games. He accumulated 104 PIM, which ranks 13th in the league. Thanks to the last game, he finished with a decent +4 in the +/- category.
He missed six games because of his participation at the World Junior Championships, was a healthy scratch four times, and missed two games due to suspensions.
When in the line-up, Rahimi bounced up and down on the depth chart, from playing several games on Bjorkloven's top defensive pairing to being hardly used as seventh defender on other occasions.
Defensively and physically, Rahimi is as good as advertised, but offensively he was a non-factor in most games and his discipline is somewhat questionable, if not to say disastrous at times.
After 14 dull appearances at the beginning of the season, he had to watch the next two games from the press box and then was out of control after returning to the ice, collecting 43 PIM over a three-game span. As a result, he got suspended and then was used as a spare defender in three of the next six games.
After the WJC in December, Rahimi vented his frustration over Sweden's disappointing performance with 29 PIM in the first two games back with his team, which earned him another suspension and a seat in the press box for two more games.
After that, he was able to keep his emotions in check and finished the regular season in solid fashion.
Bjorkloven finished the regular season with a record of 25-17-3, and now will have to emerge victorious in a four-team playoff to get the last spot in the so-called "Kvalserien" and a chance to play for promotion to the SEL.
Rahimi apparently will have the opportunity to play with the Manitoba Moose for the remainder of the AHL season once he is done in Sweden, so it will be interesting to see how the rest of the 06-07 campaign unfolds for him.

You have to remember that the Moose are a team that's trying to win something too. They aren't just for developing NHL prospects. Arniels main focus should be to win games for the Moose. If that means playing career AHLers instead of a young prospect I'm fine with that.

That's absolutely awesome...finally a shutdown dman who'll beat anyone who runs Luongo (yes, Luongo will have signed a contract extension by the time Rahimi makes the NHL) Let's just hope the instigator rule jumps up before he comes around or he'll be suspended a lot.

He'd be a -15 if he had poor hockey sense, especially in the high scoring QMJHL.
