Schneider to fight for Moose net time
By KEN WIEBE -- Sun Media
Cory Schneider is bracing himself for a long, cold winter.
The Vancouver Canucks 2004 first round draft pick signed an entry-level contract yesterday and fully expects to begin his professional career in the American Hockey League with the Manitoba Moose.
"Yeah, I've heard some bad stories, but it can get pretty cold in Boston, so hopefully, I'm prepared somewhat," Schneider told reporters in Vancouver yesterday.
Schneider, who led Boston College to the Frozen Four championship game in each of the past two seasons, felt it was time to take the next step and believed another year of college might hamper his development.
"I was ready to face a bigger challenge," said Schneider, who opted to forego his final season of eligibility. "Wheverever they send me, I'll be excited to go. I feel like I need some time in Manitoba to prepare myself and get ready."
Obviously, the goal for Schneider is to eventually play in the NHL. How long it takes for him to get there is anyone's guess.
And getting a solid share of the workload with the Moose will help him more than watching Roberto Luongo play the bulk of the games for the Canucks.
"You can't argue, Luongo is probably the best goalie in the league right now," said Schneider, who was studying business and finance at Boston College. "It's kind of up to me, with how I play and what the organization thinks of me and when they think I'm ready, so it's hard to put a time (table) on it. I try not to worry about that, it was more important to get into the organization and start developing and playing at the next level.
"I understand it's not going to happen overnight or be a quick fix. It's going to be sacrifice and development. I'm not here to rush it, make a mistake by coming too soon so I'm willing to do whatever it takes -- however long it takes to get there."
Speaking of goalies, the Canucks signed former St. Louis Blues netminder Curtis Sanford yesterday and he is expected to serve as Luongo's backup.
That means Drew MacIntyre, who has yet to sign his qualifying offer, could battle Sanford for the No. 2 job but will more than likely share the crease with Schneider this season.
It also signals the end of the Wade Flaherty era.
Flaherty said yesterday he's had some nibbles on the open market but nothing concrete as of yet.
The Canucks were busy yesterday, officially announcing the signing of forwards Jason Jaffray, Brad Moran and Greg Classen and inking forwards Brad Isbister and Byron Ritchie to contracts.

Who Will Dress on Opening Night?
Bourdon 32
Grabner 7
Edler 22
Raymond 7
Hansen 30
I really dont see how Edler or Bourdon could possibly play in our crowded top 6.
But if Hansen or Raymond or even Grabby impress in camp, they could take that last top 6 spot.

i dont wanna translate all but the important thing that the article says is he was 83rd ranked north american, that he needs to improve his consistancy and he will have the chance to do that next year when he'll be playing on a more scoring line.
