Messier with an assist so far
QUOTE (Dave Chappelle)You know why my show is good? Because the network officials say you're not smart enough to get what I'm doing, and every day I fight for you. I tell them how smart you are. Turns out, I was wrong. You people are stupid.

Prospects make impression on Moose

By KEN WIEBE -- Sun Media
http://slam.canoe.ca...487059-sun.html

The first stage is complete and now it's time to get down to the serious business of trying to make the big club.

Fifteen of the 25 players who attended prospects camp did enough to earn an invite to the Vancouver Canucks main camp, which opens tomorrow in Victoria, B.C.

One of the players Manitoba Moose head coach Scott Arniel saw live and in person for the first time was top goaltending prospect Cory Schneider, who is expected to push Drew MacIntyre for playing time with the Moose this season.

"He's a big kid and he's very athletic," Arniel said in an interview from Victoria. "He's a very confident goaltender. It'll be real interesting to see what happens when he gets in with the big guys. We'll see how he progresses here."

Other players who caught the eye of Arniel during the course of camp were forwards Mason Raymond and Jannik Hansen and defencemen Alex Edler and Luc Bourdon.

Michael Grabner, the Canucks' first-round pick in 2006, also had his moments.

"He was pretty light at the end of the year when we got him in the playoffs," said Arniel. "He came back about 10 pounds heavier and sometimes that can be a bad thing. But he seems to have adjusted. He still has that explosive speed and his quickness."

One of the biggest surprises from camp was winger Pierre-Cedric Labrie, who had 35 goals, 63 points and 113 penalty minutes for the Baie-Comeau Drakkar of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League last season and could end up with the Moose.

"He's a big, big kid, around 220 (pounds) and skates and moves real well," said Arniel. "He's a power forward who played only one year of major junior hockey. He has some toughness to him and also some pretty good hands."

One of the unexpected cuts was forward Alex Bolduc.

"(Bolduc) had a tremendous camp and he's in great shape," said Arniel. "I know he's disappointed that he's not moving on but he has to use that to motivate himself to get to the next level as well."

It should be noted that Jason Jaffray was released after rookie camp last year and went on to lead the Moose in scoring with 35 goals and 81 points in 77 games.

NOTES: The Canucks returned RW Dan Gendur to the Everett Silvertips of the WHL, while C Charles-Antoine Messier was sent back to Baie-Comeau of the QMJHL.

- They say that everything happens for a reason - I'm still waiting - They say the good die young - I guess that's why you were chosen -

CCF4E, glad you brought that up

Skates well and skates fast are 2 different things

You can have all the speed in the world, and be a horrid skater (think that asian figure skater-turned ice hockey player from the Mighty Ducks movies)
Vice versa you can have very shifty skating ability and be slow

I think Arniel means, considering his size, and considering he will never have top-flight speed, he skats better than anticipated

Which is very good for him and the org. because it means he's already improving the largest weakness in his game

Because he was just signed? Or because he's 26? Or what?

If it's because he was just signed, I don't see how that makes a difference. I mean unless he makes the Canucks I guess ...

If it's about his age, I don't see how that defines a player as a prospect or not.

Its the age, after so many games in the minor pros(AHL/ECHL) i dont think you can be a prospect after 6 seasons in AHL/ECHL

I heard good things about Schneider in the Intramural game.

Looks like we have ourselves a player.

I wonder what sort of ice time he will get during the pre-season...

Judging from last night's game with McIntyre and Sanford and Cory tomorrow tonight - we have got us some fine depth at goaltending
