Vancouver's needs are pretty simple, goalies. It takes many years to become a solid backup. Dipietro has credentials, but likely not even Vancouver would have plans of him starting next year. Krahn has great potential.

With this pick they don't have much of a chance at getting a goalie that will help them in the long run. Dan Blackburn and Pascal Leclaire are two goalies that are highly rated and have been highly scouted. They both have promising careers in the NHL. With the Canucks selecting 16th this year, the chances of either one of them getting drafted by Brian Burke and the Canucks very unlikely.

The only way that the Canucks would have a chance at getting either one of them was if a team like the New York Rangers made a deal. Since the Rangers are in need of a young goalie in their system, this is very unlikely. The Canucks need a team that does not need a goalie to make a deal with a team that needs a young goalie. Rumors are already swirling about the possibility of Jagr going to the Rangers, but there also is the possibility that Mike Peca or one of the Sabres many good young goalies to be dealt. Anything is possible. But the chances of the Canucks getting either Blackburn or Leclaire are very unlikely.

I also think that the possibility or the Canucks trading their pick if a goalie is not available a very likely situation. The Canucks obviously lack penalty killing strength, and a point man on the power play. With the pick they have this year it is possible that the Canucks could deal it for a power forward type right winger. Someone like a Brad Isbister.

Kirill Koltsov was eligible for the 2001 Entry Draft, but chose not to 'opt-in'. The Russian Defenseman probably would've gone in the top twenty in 2001, a strikingly more deep draft than this year's edition; but he's looked at as a mid-to-late first rounder, possibly a second-rounder in this year's draft.

Strengths: Koltsov is an excellent skater, with great speed and very good balance. His offensive skills are top-notch; especially when coupled with his skating ability. Koltsov makes a crisp first-pass out of the zone, which may fuel some 'offensive defenseman' expectations. As previously mentioned, Kirill has good hockey sense and rarely makes a poor offensive decision. His overall defensive game is solid; he's a decent checker despite his size, and he won't back down from many.

Weaknesses: He has been branded with the 'bad attitude' tag ever since last season. Koltsov was a no-show at this season's WJC because he was feuding with club management. Coincedentally, his icetime was a little bit lower in Omsk because of his attitude, as well; as Koltsov had some arguments with the coaching staff there.

Also, at age nineteen, scouts have had an extra season to pick Koltsov's game apart; and one of his biggest flaws is his lack of discipline. Koltsov often flies off the handle or takes silly penalties which could've been avoided, had he not been so high-strung.

Bottom Line: He'll be long-gone by the time the Canucks get to pick in the second round; unless the club decides to acquire a first on draft day, which, if Brian Burke took a risk, would be put to good use on a player like Kirill. He is what is described as a '(very) high-risk, high-reward' prospect.

Was benched in all crucial situations for Team Canada in the World Juniors...but then again, it WAS Tom Renney coaching...

Could become the personification of Brian Burke's pomposity and ineptness regarding the Bure Deal. Though Dave Gagner is filling that spot admirably already. If the much-vaunted "Young Defense" turns out as good as we Canuck fans hope and expect, then Weekes will see his stats improve greatly...he will be another "Chris Osgood", except without the "clutch play"...

If the Canucks do what they should (open up the play), he could be a very valuable player...I fear he will always remain an enigma however...Canuck fans will say things like "he COULD get 30-40 goals, on another team", etc...sounds like Brian Savage...

Notes: Matt Cooke could be a very valuable player in a few years (like Walker is for Nashville and Tucker is for Tampa)...fiesty, quick, with a surprisingly good skill level, Matt lacks the big league shot and size to move up from a 3rd/4th line player...will be a team leader and will score the occasional clutch goal however...if given a chance with some real ice-time (once again, like Walker and Tucker got this year), Cooke's projected stats could rise to around 15/20/35, if not higher. His low projected stats are due mainly to what is expected to be a limited role in the NHL. Played very well in the AHL while he was there...in fact, going by statistics, you could say that Cooke outplayed both Holden and Schaefer while down there...and yet it was Holden and Schaefer who were called up at the end of the year...could possibly be the perception that Cooke is too much of a "Keenan-Style" player for Burke/Crawford's liking.

Could become a legitimate heavyweight enforcer, with the actual ability to play hockey... hopefully Brown can replace Donald Brashear as quickly as possible ...after Jovanovski, Brown is looking like the next best player in the Bure Deal to come over to the Canucks. Basically a lock to make it within 2 years, due to the fact he was in the Bure Deal ...he will get a 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th chance, if that's what it takes, to make Burke look as good as possible.

Holden probably would have become that first line center if not for the injuries he suffered in his last two years of Junior. I was at the game where he had his hand stepped on and it looked brutal. There was blood all over the ice, and after that he just never seemed to be the same player. He was hesitant to go to the dirty area's after that (the injury happened right in front of the net after he had been crosschecked to the ice.) and seemed to lose what had been an explosive scoring touch.

Josh Holden falls into the category of "Canucks Draft Busts", but at the time, he was very blue chip. It's unfortunate that his injury may have been the prime factor in what ruined his NHL career. Plus, it's also not like there was anybody after Holden that did a whole lot. Sturm, Zubrus and Briere are probably the best three that went after Holden. But at that time Briere was too small for the NHL and Sturm was...German I guess. Zubrus has never lived up to his 1st round status either.

The best pick of the draft was arguably in the 8th round, with Thomas Kaberle. Salo went in the 9th. The 1996 NHL draft is one of the weakest ever.

To be honest with you, if he even plays as much as Lee Goren did as a constant call-up from the minors I would be happy. Having a seventh-rounder even play in the NHL at one point is a great accomplishment.

Well, with the possible huge shake-up of the team, I'd say anyone who has a strong season on the Moose has a pretty good chance. I'd say it's even possible for Simek and Grabner depending on the look of next year's team. I'd say Shannon will be on there anyways. Luc will probably get a roster spot, as will Edler (Looks like he's already sticking). Guys like Jaffray and Moran seem like AHLers for life though.

I think probably one top 6 spot will be open for one of the young players Raymond/Simek/Grabner come to mind.

And also one top 9 spot (I/E 2nd/3rd line) which hopefully Hansen wins.

Edler is a lock for the team, Bourdon should be able to take a 5/6 spot if thats the direction we are going to take the team in (younger and faster)

For Bourdon to make the team, one of Salo Ohlund Mitchell Krajicek Bieksa will have to be moved.

As for Dmac, I hope he really wants to make the NHL and will go through a year of about 10 games.

I'd really love to see Shirokov and Kablukov in camp next year. If we don't get Shiro over this year, I don't think we'll ever see him.

Oh and Rahimi was re-assigned to the Salmon Kings today.
