Michael Grabner added to his hat collection on Wednesday night with three more goals, giving the 19-year-old three hat tricks in his last six outings and seven career. Two of the above players played four seasons (Leeb and Whitfield) and three of them five years (Krymusa, Cote and Klassen).  

Only five players ahead of Grabner on the franchise’s all-time list played fewer than 200 games:

Valeri Bure – 135 goals in 178 games
Ryan Duthie – 106 goals in 198 games
Maxim Bets – 95 goals in 117 games
Rob Friesen – 92 goals in 187 games
Brent Gilchrist – 90 goals in 98 games

Grabner has 88 goals in 176 games with seven remaining this season.

Thanks to a torrid stretch in the second half last year, Grabner finished the season with 36 goals and, with his performance this year, has become the first player since Whitfield and Marian Cisar to score 30 goals in back-to-back seasons. Whitfield had three straight years of 30 goals from 1995 to 1998 and Cisar did it in 1996-97 and 1997-98. No player in the 12 seasons of the Spokane Arena has scored 75 goals, Grabner’s totals for the past two, in back-to-back years. Pat Falloon and Ray Whitney each scored 124 combined goals in consecutive seasons in 1989-90 and 1990-91.

Grabner will be in the lineup on Saturday night when the Chiefs travel to take on the U.S. Division leading Everett Silvertips at 7:00. Mike Boyle will go on the air at 6:30 with Comcast Hockey Tonight on KJRB 790 the Fan.

just because val scored alot too doesn't mean grabner is gonna turn out like him... although it wouldn't be terrible, as long as he doenst get injured

but what should be our draft strategy? should we draft the best player avaliable? or draft the players that we need now?

for example, if a goalie is the best player when its our turn, do we draft the goalie (maybe later use him as trade bait) or pass on the goalie to get a forward?

Drafting a goalie would be stupid.

Well you have to adress your needs and we have no centres in the system so we really need a centre.

The talent level is pretty even for where we will be picking.

Just an update on Jason King. His scoring dropped right off, and in 54 games has 15 goals and 4 assists, 19 points... By comparison, early in the season, him and Steve Kariya were pretty much equal, doing decent. Now ? Kariya has 23 goals, 15 assists, 38 points in the same number of games.

I think if there's any way we can trade his rights for something, while he still has some potential value...

Boy, seeing Val Bure on that list is scary, we don't want Mike to end up like Val, do we?

Val Bure was quite a talented goal scorer, from what I remember, when he entered the league. He took a lot of shots and was very shifty (not as much as his brother). There were, however, too many problems in his game such as shying away from contact and staying to the perimeter often. That's why he had more shots than Naslund had in a single season yet Naslund has ended up with more goals. He didn't drive to the net very often when there was a defender and if he did he got pushed off very easily. That leads to his second problem which was injuries. He was smallish and could get pushed around too easy to play in the NHL. Thus this leads to a lack of confidence, and thus he plays in the NHL no more.

Grabner has shown to some degree that he'll go to the net (I've seen 4 games this season, latest one was the blow-out against Portland Winterhawks), and he'll put a fight with the defender's to a certain degree, but he'll lose motivation quickly and leave the area. He sticks to the perimeter too much for my liking. Most of his goals are off the transition game, odd-man rushes, and break-a-ways. But when the team has possession of the puck in the offensive zone he seems to disappear which won't cut it in the NHL. What I do like is he is back-checking much more than he used to (scored off a good fore-check and back-check in the Portland game) and he's become more rounded. But I do believe he needs to learn to put up more of a fight (fend off defenders) when the defencemen initiate, irregardless of if he wants to initiate contact.

Also having injuries two seasons in a row where he misses games also seemed to me be similar to Gaborik's situation (fast goal scorer who runs into issues with hip, groin, and ankle-- all used for the skating motion). I'm wonder if all this speed will cause him to lose some games in the NHL because his skating motion causes him to pull muscles awkwardly or git hit and pull muscles awkwardly. In any case its unfortunate, but here's to hoping he's not another Havlat or Gaborik injury-wise.

Fair enough, you can teach someone to work the corners you can't teach someone to skate, stick handle and shoot as well as he does. Once Grabby plays with the Moose or Nucks veterans and the quality of coaches will probally improve his game quite a bit. When Gaborik came into the league he was a floater and corner shy, his game has since become a lot more rounded.

Seeing anybody on that list is scary. Not saying he won't be, but it's just proof that you can have an amazing WHL career, but it doesn't automatically translate into that great of an NHL career.

Time will tell, but I don't want to get my hopes up.
