1) Honda Civic DX-G - Coupe or Sedan.
2) VW City Jetta
3) Hyundai Elantra - I'm not so keen on this car but my parents has a friend who works at a Hyundai dealership.
All three are reliable, fuel-efficient. I don't know too much about cars so I thought I'd ask what you guys thought. The vehicle will be used mostly in Langley/Surrey area with occasional trips to Vancouver.
Thanks.
I would choose Toyota from that list
If seriously, each one of those cars has its pros and cons.
1. VW is a reliable German manufacturer, but most of their currently built cars come from factories in Mexico. That's why you seem enourmous price drop from a few years ago. One of my friends worked for a company that provided one of the electrical components to VW, and he travelled to Mexico to one of the factories - you don't want to know how they build cars there, there is a reason why labor is so cheap. You should also be prepared to spend extra money on gas on weekly basis. The car is reliable and "heavy" so safety ratings are quite impressive. Repairs would cost you quite some money too.
2. Honda Civic - I like 2007 design, and its fuel economy is simply astounding. Only Hybrid beats civic in fuel economy. They are reliable, and parts are cheap and long lasting. For disadvantages, Honda's tend to rust much quicker than other brands due to use of cheap material, so be prepared to spend some money on anti-rust covering. Otherwise, I would go with this car over the other two any day of the week.
3. Hyundai Elantra - not a fan of Hyundai at all, wouldn't recommend them.

VW- has always had good low end torque but cant touch the sweet high revs of a Honda.
Since everyone wants to drive with their balls to the walls and their foot through the floor
Coming from a proud Lancer Ralliart owner, look into the new Lancers, they look hot, they're decently priced, and you can get all the cool gadgets you ever wanted, like paddle-shifting on the steering wheel

Thanks for all your input. After carefully reading reviews, speaking with people with automobile knowledge, and picking up bits and pieces of information here and there, I went ahead a bought the 2007 Honda Civic DX-G in "Galaxy Gray." It has been great to drive and I have not had to fill in the gas yet. Most of all, it's just great to have the convenience of having a car. So the two factors that made me choose the Honda over VW:
1. Fuel Efficiency (i'm not talking TDI here)
2. Best resale value
I'm a safe driver and don't need all the bells and whistles. So I don't think I will be modifying my car very much. Anyways, I thought I'd give you some update for those of you who gave some input. Thanks.

If you'd read the thread, you'd realize he was comparing similarly priced models. The TDI was quite a bit more expensive than the Civic he bought(the TDI loses in economy to the Civic Hybrid, about the same price, although Diesel prices may bring them about even).
