If the designer wanted the artistic style to be consistent, the 'style' can depict splashes in better ways than shards of triangles.

It looks awful. When you look at the logo against a dark background. All you see is the white ice. I'm praying we go back to the original whale colour scheme now, it looks that much better on that logo.

I was really hoping for something along the lines of this...

the new orca crest is the primary logo not the shoulder patch.

I can see where you are coming from with the both the lack of ice here in the ocean and having never seen an Orca (though I have seen many) jumping through ice.

However...the artist seems to have chosen a form that would indicate ice. Perhaps he/she was attempting to blend the aquatic nature of the Orca with the "shards" of ice that would indicate a hockey rink ice? Either way, it is a slightly confusing dynamic

p.s-Just for fun, Orcas aren't proper whales they are a dolphin
