He's only recalled for this road trip as far as I can tell. Oberg lost (misplaced) his passport and couldn't make the trip to Illinois so they made the call for Ellington. I don't see him staying much past Saturday's game unless someone goes down in the meantime *knock on wood*

Ugh, obviously I didn't knock on wood fast enough after saying that. I just got a Moose alert from our local paper and we might have just lost Baumer....

Moose lose Baumgartner to broken finger

Nolan Baumgartner (TREVOR HAGAN / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS ARCHIVES)
PEORIA, ILL. -- Already decimated by injuries this season, the Manitoba Moose were dealt yet another blow this morning with the news that defenceman Nolan Baumgartner could be lost to the team until after New Year’s with a broken finger.

Baumgartner broke the little finger on his left hand Wednesday night in a 2-1 Moose win over the Rockford IceHogs and doctors in Rockford last night and here again this morning advised that a pin will need to be inserted to set it.

That would require surgery and Baumgartner would be out of the Moose lineup for as long as six weeks, Moose head coach Scott Arniel said this morning following practice at the Carver Arena.

"It’s certainly a big blow," said Arniel, who noted the injury occured just as the Moose were starting to prepare for the return of injured players like Guillaume Desbiens and Pierre-Cedric Labrie.

"We were just starting to see some light at the end of the tunnel and we lose a guy like Nolan Baumgartner, who in my opinion has been our best (defenceman) all year and certainly a leader...Bad break."

Arniel said Baumgartner will be examined again by Moose doctors on Monday after the Moose return from this road trip before a final decision on surgery is made.

Baumgartner, who missed practice this morning and won’t be available to the Moose for their games Friday night here against the Rivermen or Saturday night in Chicago against the Wolves, was lamenting his bad luck.

Baumgartner said he was struck by a puck on his first shift of the second period.

"I was trying to get in the way of a shot and the puck hit me in the hand," Baumgartner said. "It’s bad luck. You get hit by a puck and break your finger."

Arniel said a search for a replacement for Baumgartner is already underway but he’s not optimistic about finding an equal to the man he lost.

"There isn’t a lot of offensive defencemen who can log 30 minutes sitting around right now doing nothing."

Here's what the guys in Victoria have to say on Ellington:

Quote

The rookie and native Victorian Ellington, with Olivier Latendresse and Randall Gelech one of three Salmon Kings from this season who played in past Subway Super Series, was nowhere near the best blue-line performer this season for Victoria. But Ellington was taken early in the second round of the 2007 draft, 33rd overall by the Vancouver Canucks, and is a contracted prospect with upside. His early-season struggles as a pro — Ellington had a goal and four assists in 13 games for Victoria but was also sat out — again underlines that the jump from junior to even the ECHL level can be difficult.

"Taylor has to learn to show up every night on a consistent basis," said Morrison. "He is a good player but needs consistency. You have to be consistently good. That's what NHL teams are looking for. We sat him out a few games. He came around the last few games and played well."

Veteran AHL, ECHL and European pro defenceman Tim Wedderburn of the Salmon Kings was one of those who took Ellington under his wing.

"I tried to help him out every chance I got and Taylor listened and worked hard and deserves this," said Wedderburn.

^ and Bliz's first was 19 seconds in!! Machesney had a helluva game considering he hasn't seen much ice since Schneider's return. Built a 4-0 lead but they did let up a bit in third. Thankfully it didn't bite them in the butt this time but it was closer to a 60 minute game then they've had lately.

Up next is league (and division) leading Rochester on Tuesday and Wednesday. A good time to close the gap in the standings.

Should also be a good indicator if the Moose can compete with the league's best.

Indeed it should. Rochester is only 5 points up on us but the Moose have played the most games in the league only second to Abbotsford. And the good news is when Rochester loses, they lose big. They've got some great prospects on their team and games against them are always tough.

Getting Rome here for the conditioning stint will help. He's going to log big minutes since we're still without Baumgartner and Funk. Ellington will likely return to Victoria as well with Oberg here ready.

It's just nice to see that we're finally getting bodies back instead of losing them. With Bolduc's return and Desbiens ready to get back in the lineup, we might actually get more than 1 goal a game. Sucks for Bootland though as he's likely the odd man out in the vet situation since Christensen is still here until the weekend.

Either way, should be a good two game set. They better win 'cause I'm going to the game tomorrow for my birthday :D

Happy birthday in advance! Posted Image Hope they can pull out a win for you and show us what they're made of.
I guess Oberg found his passport then eh? Posted Image How did Ellington do when he played with the Moose? It'd be great if he could stick up there with Manitoba, 'cos the Salmon Kings probably aren't the team you want him to be around right now I'd imagine, given how they've been playing so far this year.

As for Rome, conditioning stints don't require passing through waivers right? And we already have SOB as the 7th defenceman, so it seems like a good move to get Rome into some action and help the Moose out for at least a little bit - instead of sitting around in the press box until someone like Salo goes down with another injury. Also, apparently Nycholat's out till around the New Year, which does really suck.

Bootland's an interesting guy; I watched one of the game day highlights and he was scrapping with some Marlies player right after he scored a goal. Now that the Moose could certainly use more of!

I've been watching the Moose play a little bit, and for the most part it seems like they play a dump-and-chase system that would look similar to the old AV system accurately a few years back. However, with Gillis at the helm of the Canucks, he wants a more up-tempo style of play and I'm not sure that the Moose system reflects that mandate right now. I'm not saying the Canucks are now a completely offensive-minded team, but at least you don't see them send in only one man on the forecheck when they're down 2 goals in the third period (at time of writing the Moose have already lost 4-1 to the Rochester Americans).

I guess the reason for my post is that I thought it's best when the NHL team and their AHL affiliate both play the same style of game? 'Cos when we bring up prospects from the minors they'd be able to fit right in, knowing that the tactics and strategies should be about the same as what they're used to down in the AHL.

Thanks for the birthday wishes!! I guess we'll know Thursday when the Moose head out if Oberg found his passport. I can't see him not having one by now without Zinger reading him the riot act!

I didn't get to see Ellington play since it was on the road but by what my other Moose friends say, he was steady. Can't really beat that when we're just looking to make sure no more guys go down injured! Although I hear the S Kings are starting to pick up their game after the roster moves. But the chances of Ellington sticking around aren't likely without more injuries.

Rome looked good tonight, picked up a lot of minutes and even tried to stir things up late in the game. I would say he looked off only based on the fact that he has never played with these guys so that was expected. And you are correct, conditioning stints are waiver~less. Nycho might be out for longer, he was expected back sometime in November but the injury was worse so he just had surgery about a week ago. That guy just seems destined to not play for the Moose :(

Boots is awesome. Definitely one of those guys you absolutely detest when he plays for someone else but love when he's one of yours. I know a lot of Moose fans hated him when he played for the Griffins but since his first stint last season, he's a fan favorite. The guy is total heart and soul. Like your example, scores a goal and sees Marco Rosa being worked over and promptly lets them know that ain't going to happen when he's around. It's just too bad he's once again caught up in the veteran numbers game. With Christensen and now Rome, he's had to sit -- I guess it all depends on whether or not Christensen clears waivers. If he does, likelihood of him staying after being re-assigned by Anaheim is high which is a blow for Boots getting ice time. When Rome leaves, it'll be ok until Baumer returns from injury.

The dump and chase is what Scott Arniel employed when the rash of injuries first hit. We literally lost all of our scoring prowess (ie: Grabner, Bolduc, Desbiens...) and it basically came down to defense and trying to capitalize on their opponents mistake. Until Pettinger and Christensen came along, we were really hurting for offense, clipping at a goal a game pace and our 5 game losing streak in there. And really, a few outbursts of scoring here and there hasn't changed the fact that we still clip by at a goal a game most nights. With the return of Bolduc and Desbiens, that should help but I don't think you'll see a change overnight, especially not after the way they played. Our style primarily, up until this season, has reflected Vancouver's.

What a night to bring their crappiest play ever. Do I exaggerate, yes but I'm miffed they didn't even bring their B+ game to the rink. So disappointed.

Much better game all around for the team. Schneider looked more like himself aside from the crappy goal 26 seconds in off a Petruic giveaway. The team rallied and didn't let that affect their play and great shooting from Rome on both his goals picking the corners on Moir. Sexton had a penalty shot but out deked himself before shooting high and wide.

Now they're off to Peoria for the start of a 3 games in 3 nights trip.

And we've lost Christensen to New York who plucked him off waivers. Ellington has also been re-assigned to Victoria but that was to be expected.
