Anticipates players going up and down during this year.
On Shannon,
Played really well for us, but, we've got to jumpstart things, been excellent on PP, hopes to give Manitoba a spark.
Can we expect to see him up and down a lot?
Nonis: Right now we haven't really found what's going to work for us in Vancouver. We have extra bodies. Instead of young players sitting and watching, much better off seeing him playing. Expect some point in the future to settle down, but there may be some more moves in the next week or two.
Thoughts on some players here,
Edler - Nonis: Alex had a very good camp. Probably deserved to stay with the Canucks. Look at our top 7, would certainly be in 7-hole. Doesn't have desire to have young players watching games from the pressbox. Loves watching him out on the powerplay, thinks he can still some learn. Absolutely confident he will be an NHL defenseman.
Bourdon - Nonis: Expectations are high with him. Had such a great camp when he was 18. Everyone thought he was going to step right in and be a top 4. It just hasn't happened. Not possible that this happens with all players. He'll benefit from being here in Manitoba. Loved him in the first two periods. Thinks that he's going to make an impact here. Has great footspeed and is playing with emotion and heart.
Wants Bourdon playing physical. Wants him to be a well-balanced defenseman, can play hard and tough with some offense.
Rypien - Nonis: I think that Rick will be playing games with us REALLY QUICKLY. One thing we're missing right now is 'emotion', third/fourth line player that can be really hard to play against. We sent him down to play at the start was to make sure he got some time in and a game or two in before we put him into Vancouver.
Raymond - Nonis: Mason's been having a great job. He has no problem keeping him up there if he's going to play with the club. If he's going to sit, send him to Manitoba. As he gets more and more comfortable he will get better and better. As he learns the pro game and the pace, he can only improve. He thinks he'll stick and if he doesn't, he'll make a positive impact with the Moose.
On sending players down, what do you say to them
Nonis: Sometimes, it's not telling them to improve. Some guys are impressing and it's not because of what they are doing, but more to do with team needs. Shannon may not have deserved going down, but Canucks aren't playing 'big' right now and that needed to be addressed. IF a player is not playing well is you tell them what the problems are and give them a heads up. Loves the coaching in Manitoba as he's comfortable with them and knows they are good at addressing a player's defencies. He tries to be honest and straightforward.
