Victoria, BC - The Victoria Salmon Kings, proud affiliate of the Vancouver Canucks and Manitoba Moose, announced today that they have signed defenseman Patrick Coulombe for the 2009-10 season.
The former Vancouver Canuck contracted player participated in 56 games with the Salmon Kings during the 2008-09 season. He tallied six goals and 16 assists for 22 points while serving 36 minutes in penalties. In nine Kelly Cup Playoff games this past spring he scored five points (1g-4a) and added six minutes in penalties. Coulombe was named the team's Most Valuable Player for the 2008-09 by the coaching staff.
"Patrick is a very large part of our team," General Manager and Head Coach Mark Morrison said. "He plays full out each and every shift, but also brings a high level of skill to both ends of the ice. Patrick leads by example and we are excited to have him back."
The 5-9, 163 lb. blueliner spent the majority of the 2007-08 with the Salmon Kings where he scored 30 points (8g-22a) in 58 games and accumulated 40 minutes in penalties. Coulombe dressed for two games that season on a call-up to the Manitoba Moose of the American Hockey League where he tallied no points or penalty minutes.
The 24-year-old Coulombe split the 2006-07 season between all three teams within the affiliation (Victoria, Manitoba, and Vancouver). The majority of the season was spent with the Moose where he dressed for 44 games scoring three goals and six assists for nine points and serving 22 minutes in penalties. Coulombe also participated in one Calder Cup Playoff game with Manitoba where he accrued no points or penalty minutes. In six games with Victoria the defenseman tallied three points (0g-3a) and two minutes in penalties. Coulombe also spent seven games of the 2006-07 campaign in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks where he notched one assist and four penalty minutes.
In 120 career games a Salmon King Coulombe has scored 14 goals and added 41 assists for 55 points with 78 minutes in penalties. Coulombe is only one of two players (Wes Goldie) that has dressed for all 26 of the Salmon Kings' Kelly Cup Playoff games.
For his three-year professional career Coulombe has appeared in 173 games scoring 65 points (17g-48a) and serving 104 minutes in penalties.
The majority of Coulombe's five-year junior career was spent with the Rimouski Oceanic of the QMJHL. His best full season in Rimouski came in 2004-05 where he scored 68 points (8g-60a) in 70 games with 46 minutes in penalties. Coulombe helped Rimouski to a QMJHL championship that spring, scoring 19 points (2g-17a) in just 13 games with six penalty minutes.
His final year of junior (2005-06) was split between the Oceanic and the Chicoutimi Sagueneens following a mid-season trade. This season proved to be his best offensively as he scored 23 goals and 54 assists for 77 points in 62 games with 40 minutes in penalties. This included 49 points (18g-31a) in 33 games in Chicoutimi following the trade from Rimouski.
For his junior career Coulombe played in 297 games scoring 229 points (44g-185a) and accrued 196 minutes in penalties.
The St. Fabien, QC native also represented Canada at the 2003 IIHF World U18 Championships in Russia. He played in all seven of Canada's contests and tallied two assists in helping Canada win its first ever gold medal at the tournament.
The Salmon Kings have now signed 10 forwards (Kaleb Betts, Curtis Billsten, Andy Brandt, Olivier Filion, Wes Goldie, Brady Leavold, David Rutherford, Dirk Southern, Yannick Tifu and Bear Trapp) and seven defenseman (Mike Burgoyne, Patrick Coulombe, Gary Gladue, Rob Smith, Matt Waddell, Tim Wedderburn and Ryan White) for the 2009-10 season.
Glad to see Patty back and I can't wait to see Tifu and Goldie play on a line together.

He can be called up to any AHL team that's willing to give him a contract (even if only for a couple days). He should be a free agent at the AHL level.

He's getting too old now - turned 30 this year. AHL clubs would rather take a young guy.

The fish also signed offensive defenceman Brandon Roach.
The team is starting to take shape, and it's looking like another strong team so far.

If you go up a few posts (to #682), you can see that he was signed by the Salmon Kings.
I'm guessing the signing took a while so he could explore his options a bit, see if anything came up at the AHL level.

Most players have some AHL experience. Morrison suspects the only spot they may struggle is in defensive-minded defensemen. After Wedderburn, there's a whole lot of offensive dmen.
As for goaltending,
Quote
Morrison said he is awaiting word on goaltender David Shantz, a second-round Florida draft pick from 2004, now in the Calgary Flames’ system.
“The Sutters will make that decision and we should know Sunday if he’s coming,” said Morrison.

in his CHEK-6 interview - he had some AHL offers, but were 2-way deals (so probably would be assigned to an ECHL team anyway). By just signing an ECHL contract, he could be offered an AHL try-out contract by any AHL team

And, when in the ECHL, he gets to play with the ECHL team of his choice - our team.
It's kinda weird how some of the contracts work. Like Brady Leavold - he's in the Lightning system, but the Salmon Kings have his ECHL rights so he can't be assigned to Tampa Bay's ECHL affiliate. But the only AHL team he can play for is TB's AHL affiliate.

Salmon Kings received goalie David Shantz from the Flames system. I'm guessing his being assigned to Victoria is a combination of proximity to Abbotsford and the fact that the Flames share an ECHL affiliate with the Islanders - there might not have been room for another goalie.
First round of cuts on Sunday included surprise cuts Brady Leavold (maybe freeing him up to play in the TB system?) and Curtis Bilsten, along with David Rutherford.

Lots of Victoria guys in camp, including both Gendur and Ellington. Even Matt Pettinger is there - no, he's not looking to play with the team, he's just skating with them for fitness reasons. He was signed as a formality for insurance reasons, but has no intention of playing for the club.

Ellington is looking good so far, especially by showing off that mean streak of his by dropping the gloves.

guessing this all came from the protected roster at the end of last year... "protected" not meaning that they will get a contract next year, but their ECHL rights belong to the team, ie the player can't play for another ECHL team (regardless of NHL/AHL contract status) unless a trade for those rights is made
but wouldn't that mean , if Leavold was to play for the TB ECHL affiliate, they goud get something back via trade?
