danick paquette is exactly what the canucks need he's big, physical, a right handed shot, good leader and a has great character. he already does tons of work with kids giving away 4 tickets to his home games. how he's not ranked higher then 45 i don't know. the only thing i've read is that his skating needs work but it look ok if you ask me(i will admit he could get faster).

"To watch Danick Paquette on the ice is to see a 6-foot, 209-pound beast that can use his hands to beat opponents in many different ways.

Off the ice, though, Paquette uses those same hands to hug, help and hold the attention of youngsters who might not get the opportunity to enjoy hockey.

And in both ways, the 17-year-old forward is adding to the success of the Lewiston MAINEiacs of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Paquette was ranked No. 45 among North American skaters when Central Scouting released its final rankings last month, and he’s likely to go no later than the third round when the 2008 NHL Entry Draft is held in Ottawa on June 20-21.

In his second season with the MAINEiacs, Paquette had 29 goals – third-most on the team – 42 points, and a team-leading 213 penalty minutes in 63 games.

It was an impressive outing for a player certainly on the way up.

“He’s got 30 goals, a couple hundred penalty minutes; nobody wants to go near this guy,” said Chris Bordeleau, Central Scouting’s QMJHL scout. “He’s not a great skater, but he works hard.”

“I think they like my style,” said Paquette. “Not everybody can play physical, score, fight -- be a power forward. I don’t think they have a lot of players with my style. They search for players like me.”
NHL teams also should be searching for people like Paquette.

This season, he started “Danick’s Den,” giving four tickets to every Lewiston home game to area children and their families, who might not be able to otherwise afford the tickets.

“It’s a privilege to have this life,” Paquette said. “These people, they don’t have the chance. They don’t have two parents, or everything they want. Sometimes when they come, after the game they come see me and they say this is the first time I’ve seen the MAINEiacs and this is the best thing I’ve seen in my life. It touches my heart.”

“I’m really, really proud because it comes from him and not from his parents, so I’m really, really proud,” said Lucien Paquette, Danick’s father.

Giving back, though, is a Paquette family tradition. Lucien and his wife, Mathalie, use their sporting goods store in Montreal, Sports 47 –Danick’s number with the MAINEiacs is No. 47 – to help underprivileged children and youth hockey organizations in the Montreal area.

“Everybody loves that family,” said Stephane Fiset, the former NHL goalie who will serve as Danick’s agent when he starts his pro career. “They’re doing so much for everybody.”

Growing up in Le Plateau-Mont-Royal, a less-affluent section northeast of downtown Montreal, Danick Paquette never lacked for anything when it came to hockey. His parents gave what they could, and made up the difference in loyalty and love.

For the 2006 QMJHL draft, there was a 30-person traveling party that made the 12-hour drive from Montreal to Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, to see Danick chosen No. 11 overall by the MAINEiacs. The group bought every piece of MAINEiacs gear available within the hour.

In two years in Lewiston, Lucien and Mathalie often would make the 270-mile drive from Montreal to Maine, plus they were frequent visitors at many of the MAINEiacs’ other games around the QMJHL.

And with the 2008 NHL Entry Draft nearby in Ottawa, expect there to be a sizable Paquette cheering section.

“For the draft this summer, he asked me, how can I get 100, 150 tickets,” said Fiset.

There’s also a Paquette family link to Lewiston. As an 18-year-old in 1983, Lucien Paquette had a tryout with the Trois-Rivieres Draveurs, but didn’t make the team. In 1992, the club was sold and moved to Sherbrooke, Quebec. In 2003, the franchise was sold and moved again – to Lewiston, Maine.

While Lucien never had a pro career, it’s certain his son will.

“Every time I look at him, I say he can’t skate,” said David Gregory, a scout and videographer for Central Scouting. “But he gets there – especially in the offensive zone when he wants the puck.”

“His first year he looked like a guy running around, trying to make a name for himself,” said Bordeleau. “He turned out, he’s a pretty smart hockey player. He’s got good hands … and he’s a tough kid.”

Paquette said he patterns his game after Ottawa power forward Chris Neil, “but I score more goals than him. … He can hit somebody, he can score; he’s dangerous in front of the net. He’s a good example for someone like me.”

Bordeleau said Paquette still needs to improve his skating, which reminded him of another recent prospect.

“He’s not the greatest of skaters, but we had (Brandon) Dubinsky … in his draft year he was a horrible skater,” said Bordeleau. “The kid worked his butt off, and when you play for the New York Rangers on a line with Jaromir Jagr, you can’t be too shabby. I think Paquette is that type of guy.”

1. What's led to your outburst of goals this year, after last year, when you only scored four?

Well, last year I was only playing on the fourth line. I didn't have as much ice time then, and our focus was more on creating a stir. This year I'm thinking a bit more about the hockey side.

2. Do you think much about the fact that this is your NHL draft year?I try not to think too much about it, really. I am trying to take one game at a time and play each game by itself. We'll just see what happens at the draft.

3. There seems to be more to your game than just fighting, and more than just scoring, as evidenced by your Gordie Howe hat trick (goal, assist, fight) and traditional hat trick in the same game. Any particular reason?

Part of my job is to fight a little bit, to hit hard, and another part is to score goals. It happens that way sometimes.

4. We saw some pretty nifty moves in recent games. How much did playing with Perron and Castonguay, among others last year, help your hockey skills?
For sure last year, after each practice, David Perron and I stayed out on the ice. I did hands work with him, and he was a great example to follow.

5. With the pace you are on, there is a chance you might be able to pass Sheldon Wenzel on the team's career PIM list. Do you think you'll get there?How many did he have? (526) How many do I have? (297) It's not something I'm setting out to accomplish, but it's part of my job to be tough on the ice, so it's possible, I guess.

pim's aren't all bad imo, the holding and tripping ones are bad and lazy but fights, and sticking up teamate type one are good imo. those one show he has a high compete level and is there for his teamates. anyone who hasn't watched the 2 youtube vids i posted, watch them and i garantee you'll want this kid.

Looks like he'll be the perfect line mate for the Sedins, big, strong physical and a right handed shot not the greatest skater. Plus he's got the name. Imagine:

ederle is hard to get a read on imo he may be there at 40 because of his size but who knows. i would still love paquette to be taken at 40, he's probley my fav player in the draft

i was thinking the same thing but who knows how long the sedins will be in vancouver. i think having paquette on the wing will also stop people from roughing up the sedins and maybe even get the sedins to play a bit tougher knowing they got an donkey kicker on there wing who has there back

I personally really like the kid, but the more I watch other draft eligible players who are second round projections (Ex. Mitch Wahl) the more I think he'd be more of an appropriate third round selection. If the Canucks trade for a late second rounder/early third rounder, then yes, I'd draft him. If they don't, I doubt Paquette will be the best player available at 40. By the end of the draft, I'm hoping that the Canucks have drafted at least ONE player with power forward potential; whether it be Kyle Beach, AJ Jenks, Jimmy Hayes or Dannick Paquette.

don't even compare him with carcillo, avery or downie. on the ice yes he's an in your face tough player but off the ice this kid is one of the most classy kids in the draft.

Theres alot to like about the guy

-Good in his community
-Can score goals
-Hits guys like a locomotive (watch the youtube videos)
-Fights alot so that explains the huge penalty minutes

and it didnt look like his speed was a huge issue in what i saw

Though i dont like his favourite player being Todd Bertuzzi, and calling "thunderstruck" his pump up song isnt very original, we should still take him with the 40th pick, after taking Tyler Meyers with the 10th (or Colin Wilson)

Prospect reports and Youtube videos don't tell the whole story.

My beefs with Paquette:

-Slow, slow, slow.
-Hits from behind (cheap-shot artist).
-Throws dirty hits after the whistle.
-Out of shape.
-Gets most of his points on the PP. Doesn't do much 5-on-5 except throw dirty hits.
-Not very good in the corners/along the boards.
-Takes stupid penalties and gets suspended a lot, which may hurt his team in the long-run.
-Ego issues: From what I've heard, he has adopted Perron's "Holier-Than-Thou" attitude.

At 40th overall, there WILL be players that are better than Paquette. I may be willing to take a chance on Paquette as a project-type prospect - just not in the first 2 rounds.

He reminds me of a slower, dirtier, and more arrogant version of Mike Brown, except Mike is better along the boards/corners.

Just my $0.02.

I'm guessing you just looooooove being shorthanded all the team. Albeit a lot of Paquette's penalties come from fights and misconducts, I'm pretty sure everyone doesn't like a guy who takes lazy penalties such as hooking and holding penalties.

It would be better if he had just posted the number of fights that Paquette had entered, rather than PIM. 15 hooking calls would = 5 fights, so he could have anywhere between 106 hooking/tripping penalties to 22 fights.
