I thought he looked decent last pre-season.
He's not too small, 6'1, 195 pounds.
Shoots right.
Seems to have offensive upside, as well, 30 points in 77 AHL games last year.
In his last year with Everett, he had 59 points in 66 games.
Pretty good for a defenseman.
23 years of age.

Edler point prediction: 12 goals, 33 assists and 45 points / Edler point counter: 0 goals, 7 assists and 7 points.

Fortunas is the guy I'd be looking more closely at.

'a' pp specialist, not 'your' pp specialist.
To be honest, I would gladly trade Luongo for Mason straight up right now...

Rick Jackman
Yannick Tremblay
If Patrick Coloumbe ever makes it in the NHL it would be in that role
We used to have Tom Kurvers
Greg Hawgood
Cliff Ronning had a similiar role, for the St. Louis Blues, before being a regular forward with us.
It simply means that they're usually a healthy scratch but if we're facing an opponent where we feel we can get away giving them an occasional shift they'll get a game and man the PP as well.

Learn to read.
Heshka brings some solid skills to the PP, but I think he would be outclassed if he saw a lot of 5 on 5 action or PK action. He could fill in bottom pairing minutes in a pinch and could be someone to bring in if our PP isn't working or if someone like Salo or Ohlund goes down with an injury, but beyond that, I can't see much else for him.

would you put both these guys above Ellington and McIvar in our defenseman depth chart?

I haven't seen Ellington play, so keep in mind my opinions are based solely on where he is at development-wise.
I would rate Fortunas as having the potential to be better than both McIver and Heshka, but he would need to get some NHL action. I think he could do it and be a solid bottom pairing, possibly second pairing, defenseman.
McIver and Heshka are defensemen who are much the same in terms of the role they would have on an NHL team, the only thing they differ in would be skillset. McIver is more defensively minded, Heshka is more offensively minded. Both would get exposed if tasked to play big minutes for the club, IMO.
Ellington has yet to play any pro hockey so he would be the rawest of the bunch, although he has the greatest shot at being a mainstay on an NHL team. I'd have to see him play and see how he adjusts to playing in the AHL before I could say more.

Thanks for the feedback!! Based on responses like this one I can see why you have such a high amount of respect on here.

Heshka has the potentional to have more of an offensive flaw then McIver ever will have. I don't believe they will evere be anything more then bottom pairing defenseman though.
