A Game Of Thrones: To the point of the TV show, no spoilers beyond that

I thought the S8E1 was choppy and a bit rushed.  S8E2 was better.  Had more of a flow but too many characters to get through in the final night.  Probably should have been 30 min longer to get it right.

And Arya

I can’t help but wonder if hiding in a crypt (magical wards or not) is really the best to “hide” in an impending invasion by the army of the dead.:P

Would be hilarious if Cersei had her baby and it looks like Tyrion....

My far fetched thought from long ago...........

I always wondered if these two would be the leaders of the realm when all was said and done

Not all that far fetched. If the Targs don't survive the battle of Winterfell, Gendry has a claim to the Iron Throne. A marriage to a daughter of Stark makes perfeect sense. (although not as much sense as marrying Sansa)

Maybe. Or maybe, "3rd time lucky"?

Anyway, in some bizarro twist, it looks like she's shipping her some Theon. (and won't that be an awkward bedding?)

Probably was a body double. Cersei was too. Actors are brave people the way they can stand up in front of others and do their thing, and such, but not that brave I suppose.

I read an interview with Maisie Williams that suggests otherwise. While she didn't come right out and say it was her, she did say that Dave and Dan told her that "she could show as much or as little as she wanted".....

Nah, I definitely took that more as an intense emotional connection because of familiarity, and their shared trauma over what Ramsay did to them, than anything romantic.

Watched the recent episode. Much like episode one of this season, if it were in season 3 or 4, they would have been filler and forgettable (as they already are).

Although, it had the beats of a tv show. Opening credits, beginning, middle, end, and a cliff hanger. So in that respect, I guess it’s a 10/10.

Disturbing thought:

We all know that those unable to fight are being sent to the Winterfell crypt to wait out the upcoming battle of the dead, which seems a solid strategy on the face of it. But, how do we know that the Night King won't be able to raise the dead Starks to fight in his army?

Those women and children (and Sam) are going to be right in the line of fire. (This could also be what Arya is so terrified of, when we see her in the series trailer)

Good point. Maybe that'll happen. They obviously didn't consider this and nobody else here has until you mentioned it

There are some theories floating around that the Winterfell crypt has some kind of protective spell, like the Wall, or the cave of the Three Eyed Raven. It sort of makes sense, when you consider that the Wall was built by a Stark.

Hopefully, this is the case, but I guess we'll find out on Sunday.

Probably does.  I watched a vid about Winterfell and why the line 'there must always be a stark in winterfell' which is only said twice on the show but mentioned a dozen times in the books seems so important.  The vid had some 'out there' theories but in the book there's a line 'The Knight is dark and full of terrors' not 'night' like we all though it meant.  The scene when Brienne is escorting Jaime and they come across the 3 soldiers who hanged the woman, they were Stark men and one of them actually fought along side Robb Stark.  So the author of the vid deduced that people in the North just go crazy if there isn't a stark present in winterfell.

We then move into the Age of Heroes.  Brandon the Builder raises Winterfell and The Wall.  Bran Stark notes that Weirwood roots lie underneath the tombs of the Starks, and within the books there is evidence that after death some of kind of essence of the living person remains:  Arya when taking a new face knows something of the person's life; Catelyn Stark resurrected has all her memories intact, so perhaps some remnant of each Stark after death has a purpose still.

There is magic connected to Winterfell and The Wall, both raised by Brandon the Builder.  Men of the Night's Watch can access parts of the Wall and its castles by some kind of magic associated with their service.  Brandon the Builder also built Storm's End: remember Melisandre requiring Davos to row her underneath the castle in order to avoid the castle's protective enchantments, which would prevent her casting her shadow magic.

The Starks, I think, are effectively guarantors of The Wall and the Pact.  This is where their responsibilities lie, rather than in King's landing.  Note that the Starks throughout their history pretty much stay in the North.  They pretty much marry within the North and Riverlands.  They are a powerful family and yet they've made no move to rule the whole realm or to amass further riches, lands or influence.  This demonstrates the importance of the North and the insignificance of the governance of the realm.  Where Starks have got involved, it has been personal:  Jon Arryn declaring war, and then his murder, the 'kidnapping' of Lyanna Stark.  Each time it hasn't ended well.

But it would be awesome to see Ned back.

Sorry, one more random musing:

We were all impressed by Pod's singing, when the gang were gathered around the fire. The song he sang was actually featured in the books: "Jenny of Oldstones".

If you stuck around for the closing credits, you heard a haunting version of the same song, sung by a woman. If you thought as I did, you probably assumed the singer was some Irish girl who specializes in Celtic music, but, like me, you'd be wrong. That was Florence Welch of Florence and the Machine that you heard.

Saw this line in an Ep 2 recap and it gave me a chuckle:

Quote

Courtyard: Davos and Gilly (a name my autocorrect keeps changing to “Silly”) are tending to refugees streaming into Winterfell. The kids are being systematically separated from their parents and detained in cages (just kidding, as if even Westeros would be that cruel).

Edit: And this one:

Quote

The camera cuts away as they get closer and we don’t see any more. But if Gendry’s rowing and running prowess is any indication, Arya probably had a good time.
