Ekman-Larsson, Rundblad and Klingberg

Josefson, Naatinen and Lander

Hockey Sense
Offensive Ability
Clutchness

Although looking at my votes, apparently I should have selected Nationality. Five Swedes and a Fin :P

1st Round:

Jeremy Morin
Richard Panik
Jordan Caron

2nd Round:

Thomas Vincour
Ryan O'Reilly
Jacob Joesefson

Qualities:

(It's a shame I could only pick 3)

Character - The most important attribute to look at. On and off the ice.

Clutch Ability - Speaks to their character as well. It's never a bad thing to have guys who can get it done when you need it most.

Size - I'll be honest. Using 1st and 2nd round picks on players who don't have it scares me. You never know if smaller guys can handle the rigors of the NHL.

Im still amazed at the lack of votes Composure is getting. I know there are a lot of good choices and we can only select 3.

When I think of traits I want in a prospect, composure along with hockey sense are the most important to me.

Composure is a trait that ALL good players have. The ability to take a hit to make a play, a goal scorer holding on to the puck for that extra split second before roofing it rather than just banging away, the ability for a player to hold onto the puck when there is no play to be made, a goalie who shows the ability to fight through traffic and getting run to make saves or to bounce back after letting in a goal.

Composure is important to all types of players not just the offensive guys.

Now they update the ISS and NACS lists after I did this poll.

Joesefson should be in the first, Kulikov should be out of reach etc.

I apologize, the April Poll will be more accurate.

30 Panik, Richard C 2/7/1991 L 6.01 202 Trinec CzeE

RISING

Jordan Caron - Rimouski Oceanic (QMJHL) -- Caron has been a model of consistency for the Rimouski Oceanic this season and has become one of the most dangerous offensive threats in the QMJHL this year. Caron had a very productive regular season with 35 goals and 30 assists in 54 games. Caron has the size and skill to play at the next level -- a good skater with mobility, he protects the puck well, shows good hands and a good shot. He has a nose for the net, a deceptively quick stick, and a good scoring touch.

Nick Leddy - Eden Prairie MN-HS -- Leddy continues to label himself as one of the more solid defensemen in this year’s draft. He was a dominating force at the recent Minnesota High State tournament and was voted “Mr. Hockey” for the best player in the state. His quick vision and passing in his own end makes things happen every time he handles the puck. His game has gotten better while the year has progressed.

Simon Lof - Brynas SweJ20 -- The 2008-09 season has seen Lof jump multiple age groups. The big gangly defender started the season at the J18 level, but was quickly brought up to the J20 team, where he was one of the most consistent defenders for the club. Lof also made the jump into his first Swedish Elite League game. A good skater with strong mobility, Lof needs to develop his physical game but should garner good attention from NHL clubs this summer.

Casper Carning - Frolunda SweJ20 -- A big strong physical winger, Carning has really found his stride this year with Frolunda. His 27 points were good for third-most for Frolunda in the J20 Super Elite league, and were one more than fellow top prospect Carl Klingberg. He also led the team with 74 PIM. Although he hasn’t gotten the attention that some of the other top Swedish prospects, Carning’s individual improvement this season may be above that of any other player in the country. He can dominate tight spaces and is very strong for his age group, justifying his call-up to the Frolunda Men’s club for two games where he did not look out of place. Carning has drawn comparisons to fellow countryman Johan Franzen.

Ryan Button - Prince Albert Raiders (WHL) -- Button has been excellent all season on a not-so-perfect defense corps in Prince Albert. He has steadily put up consistent numbers for the Raiders this season. He loves to jump up in the play and moves well. He has good vision and is able to make the first pass. He will be a key contributor to the Raiders’ defense corps for the next few seasons and does have the ability and skill set to take it to the next level.

Anton Rodin – Brynas IF Jr. -- Rodin tore up the U20 5 -Nations tournament in Turku, Finland, scoring four goals and three assists in four games. Perhaps the fastest rising and improving talent in Sweden at the moment, Rodin has proved to be an effective scorer, and can score unbelievable goals on a regular basis. He's a tremendous puck handler.

David Savard - Moncton Wildcats (QMJHL) -- Savard has been a model of consistency for the Moncton Wildcats this season. Savard is a solid two-way defender with good size who thinks the games well at both ends of the ice.

Linden Vey - Medicine Hat Tigers (WHL) -- Vey has been a model of consistency for the Medicine Hat Tigers this season. He has put up tremendous numbers at almost a point-a-game clip. He needs to continue with his consistency throughout the playoffs. He still needs to improve on his top-end speed and also his overall strength.

FALLING

Tommi Kivisto - Red Deer (WHL) -- Kivisto came to the Red Deer Rebels with very high expectations and seemed to have a tough time with the transition to the North American style of game. His play has struggled since his return from the World Junior Championships as he has only posted six points since the Christmas break.

David Gilbert - Quebec Remparts (QMJHL) -- Gilbert has been inconsistent offensively for Quebec this season with 43 points in 65 games played. He is a highly-skilled playmaking center who plays a finesse style of game. Doesn’t work hard every shift and lacks some edge to his game. Despite lack of consistency this season statistically, he is still a key component to the success of the Remparts run in the playoffs.

Chase Schaber - Calgary Hitmen (WHL) -- Schaber since the trade deadline, has seen his playing time decrease. Needs to improve top-end speed to give him that ability to separate himself from defenders. He's the No. 7 guy and moves up in the line-up when penalties or injuries occur.

Olli Rahkonen - K-Reipas (FinMid) -- Rahkonen started out the season on fire and was the most efficient K-Reipas scorer this season. His season was cut short with a shoulder injury, but he still managed to lead the team in scoring with 27 points in 23 games. A long shot to get drafted, he will need to put up similar numbers at the next level and prove again that his size isn’t a detriment before he will really be able to be considered a viable option at the professional level.

Rundblad not in the top 30? Could be a great 2nd round choice.

i second this! his shot is SOOOO good from the point, its almost always on, and he takes a lot of shots for a d-man. of the games i have seen, he seems to get 8-10 shots per game. plus, he is a super nice kid. very well-liked person at the highschool in Kelowna (KSS).

I wish we had more second round picks this year. <_<

De Haan
Rundblad
Ekman-Larsson

Tochkin
Barrie
Roussel

I would have taken Kulikov and Josefson, but i don't think they will be available.

Gotta take Tochkin in the second round in my opinion.
There is no way someone named Kellan Tochkin would be a bust.

Since i drafted mostly d-men i took the qualities i found to be most important in offensive defencemen. (Which assumes that they already have offensive ability)

Size - If they are big and skilled, they probably wont be as much of a liability defensively.
Skating - Likewise, if they can get back quickly
Passing - I mean the ability to make good breakout passes by this.

Special mention goes to name as a category to consider in picking a player... Not just if your name is Sutter either.
