End of Watch - 7/10

I spent the entire movie thinking about how it would have made for a kick ass TV show. But as a movie it was half decent as well.

If anyone is having a bout of annoying good spirits and wholesome joy, I suggest watching Never Let Me Go. It will cure you. ***Do not watch movie if there are any sharp implements or nooses nearby as exposure may cause involuntary suicide attempts***

SPOILER ALERT BELOW!!!

As for a rating, I give it a 3/10. I would have given it a zero if it weren't for the solid acting. The story is preposterous and the characters don't live up to the emotions they reveal. They are capable of love, hate, jealousy but not survival? At least The Island (basically the same script) puts the characters in a situation where running from their plight is difficult as they are basically raised in a subterranean prison. In this movie the character's only control is an electronic wrist band that tracks their whereabouts. No attempt to remove it? No attempt to run? Characters go to great lengths to gain an extension on life but give in when the time comes without a fight? This is a movie devoid of not only any positive emotion, but logic.

^^^Haven't seen Wreck it Ralph, but can't imagine it is better than:

- The Incredibles
- The Emperors New Groove
- The Sword in the Stone
- Toy Story 1 or 2
- Monsters Inc- Chicken Run- Wallace and Grommit

- The Incredibles

I love the incredibles, I enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph more.

- The Emperors New Groove

Wreck It Ralph was better

- The Sword in the Stone

Wreck-it Ralph was better

- Toy Story 1 or 2

I actually liked Toy Story 3 the most. I liked Wreck-it Ralph more.

- Monsters Inc- Chicken Run- Wallace and Grommit

I liked Monsters Inc, and I'm not a fan of Chicken Run or Wallace and Grommit(then again, I hate Claymation), but I enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph more.

Keep in mind that this is strictly my opinion.

A great family film. A bit cheesy at times, but that's to be expected.

Twilight: Breaking Dawn Part 2 - 4/10

First things first, my wife dragged me to this. Second, this is really her only guilty pleasure film series I have to endure, or tv for that matter. She has never watched Sex in the City, Titanic, etc. So, really I have it pretty good. That being said, this was probably the most tolerable film of the series for a guy to watch. I would give it a 1, but I know that I am not the target audience for it, so I'm trying to be fair. Quite a few things that were out of place, according to my wife. Also had the "dream sequence" that Dallas finale was critized for, which was a big FU anyone watching. Ultimately, it was a 3, but I gave it another 1 as it is the last film in the series. The credits were the best part of the film. I got to leave.

Skyfall - 7/10

Pros:
Amazing cinematography
Great fight scenes
Javier Bardem was awesomely creepy
Nice bait-and-switch with the Bond girl
All the throwbacks to previous Bond films (ejector seat, Bardem's deformity, Moneypenny etc...)

Cons:
The dialogue was terrible
The plot. I don't want to go into any spoilers here, but Bardem's motivation was dumb, his plan was even dumber, and his actions while carrying out his plan were even dumber still.

That's a shame, I was really looking forward to seeing it.

Did you see/enjoy Andrew Dominik's last movie, "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford"? I know a lot of people couldn't get into it but it was one of my favourite fims that year. Is his stuff just not your thing, or is this a step down?

I haven't seen the movie, but I have read the book (which is fantastic). I'm not sure that the movie would play as well, but I think you're kind of missing the point.

Never Let Me Go is a reflection on mortality and what it means to be human. There are plenty of stories out there about the underpriviliged rising up against their masters or trying to escape their lot in life, this just isn't one of them. And I don't find it at all difficult to believe that they wouldn't escape. I do get where you're coming from. I remember reading the book and thinking "just run away you idiots!" But if you've been brought up your whole life to fulfill a certain task, you're conditioned to carry it out. It's not like they're kidnapping young adults and forcing them into the program. Their whole lives have led up to their donations. They wouldn't even consider other options.

Yeah, I went to Skyfall.

8/10, I guess. The movie itself was a 7, but the weight of the Bond name brings it up a point. Better than Quantum of Solace but worse than Casino Royale.

Enjoyed watching it but was underwhelmed after so many of you were hyping it. Wouldn't be in my top 5 of the year.
Edit: Hell, even in the last month I have enjoyed Life of Pi and Cloud Atlas more.

The point wasn't missed, I just found it distasteful and rather untrue as a caricature of a human struggle. Of course people escape. Of course people rise up. The book may be different than the movie but since I have only seen the movie, I can only say that the movie was poorly done. As a fan of introspective movies, I was glad when it was over and was disappointed that I wasted time watching it. I suggest for you (out of kindness for your response) to avoid watching this movie and watch We Need To Talk About Kevin instead. Much better movie - 7.5/10.

The Dark Knight Rises - 7.5/10

Watched it again (as I had to buy the Blu-Ray). Forget what I gave it before, but this seems pretty similar. I actually enjoyed it a lot more this time around than I did in the theatre. I was going to give it an 8, but there are still some plot holes that are a little too glaring at this point.

However, I read an interview with Nolan yesterday in which he indicated that there was a 202 (or 212) minute directors cut of the film. Although entirely too long, he said that this cut would explain the plot holes that angered many fans (expected to come out fall 2013).

Although I have never seen Clerks 2, and have no desire to, Jason Mewes (Jay) has been in a TON of stuff since the original Clerks.

I'm with you on that one. I love the original Clerks but the sequel was godawful. I can't believe that it got a standing ovation at Cannes. As for the actors (not including cameos) Rosario Dawson and Jason Mewes (as previously mentioned) still work, albeit not exactly on the same level of stardom. Kevin Smith apparently quit everything.

That's too bad. I know the critical reception was pretty mixed on it despite the pedigree of the actors and the source material. Maybe the director just farked it up somehow. I'd still recommend the novel, although if you already know the "twist" going into it it might take a lot away from the experience.

I've seen We Need to Talk About Kevin, and I'd agree with the 7.5. Talk about a dark, dark movie though. That's another one where I think going in knowing nothing about it would have made it a lot more interesting. As it was I was just kind of waiting around for the violence to start. L

Lynne Ramsay's previous 2 films (Ratcatcher and Morvern Callar) are supposed to be really good as well. They're a little harder to find though. I know the AV club had Movern Callar as one of their best films of the decade a couple of years ago. It might be worth tracking them down if you liked WNNTAK.

Also Clerks 2 is ???? hilarious. I have no idea why so many people hate it. It's got Jay and Silent Bob, a donkey show, Randall trying to "take back" racist slurs, Rosario Dawson, and a song and dance number set to ABC... It's brilliant. And Kevin Smith announced Clerks 3 yesterday as his last film before he retires, so another one is coming.
