im curious. goalies aren't allowed black tape on there sticks, so why would they allow goalies to have black pads, blocker, trapper?

but in a preseason game....

....julien ellis wore black equipment.

so is it allowed?

i'm pretty sure it's allowed but there is proof that shooters find it harder to score on goalies with white pads because the white camouflages with the ice
coloured pads help shooters see open spots a lot easier
that's why marc-andre fleury switched from the bright yellow ones to white

I haven't heard anything about it not being allowed...

Not NHL but Carey Price wore black pads for the WJCs a couple of years ago. Now I think he has some red ones that are pretty dark. And I think a little while ago Turco had some dark green ones. What's the difference between dark ones and black ones really?

Since when are goalies not allowed black tape? Have you seen Martin Brodeurs tape?

Yes, but it's not smart. I've heard of "goalies wearing black" shows the white net behind them allowing players to see every spot that is open since the white net and black equipment are opposite colors. I heard something Similar with Fluery's Yellow pads.

who cares what colour of pads you have as long as the goalie is making saves with them.

You can have black tape if you want. Most goalies prefer the white because you can see the puck at the end of your stick and your nob dosnt get mistaken for the puck. (It happens, when I played the ref called my nob a goal  )
White equitment makes you look larger so most goalie prefer the white, its just all about preference. Some like white, others like darker colours.
No rule on what colour your pads or tap is

I heard some players are trying to get plain white pads banned.

according to karri ramo
http://lightning.nhl...e.jsp?&id=34585 (at about 2:50)

guess maybe it only applies to the knob.

if it's allowed, i am surprised that more goalies don't wear black pads since it will give them a great advantage in crease scrambles because the puck will camouflage into the pads. this is the exact reason why goalies with teams that have darker colours prefer coloured pads.

yet in soccer, goalies wear bright colours, because apparently the bright colours attract the eye of the shooter so you want to shoot at it.

thanks rozz, you're a beast.

Soccer is completely different. You want to stand out from your outfield players so the refs know where you are. It's ridiculously annoying trying to find a goalie wearing the same kit as the other players and trying to call hand ball in the box.

If goalies want to go even further, they could have that strip of yellow at the bottom with the white bezels like the camouflage pads.

Actually the sickest pads would be the blue colour of the crease, with pictures of life-size pucks in various orientations all over the pads.
