Fail. After the Bourdon tragedy our defensive prospect cupboard is looking bare when it comes to impact players.

Initially, de Haan’s numbers dropped off following the John Tavares trade to the London Knights, and some presumed that his points total for the first half of the season were inflated. But he shook these presumptions over the last month of the season, registering 17 points over his final 13 games. He really seems to have a strong grasp of the offensive side of the game. De Haan has fantastic puck control and is one of the top puck moving defenseman in the draft. He skates well, and isn’t a liability in his own end, as he led the 9th place Oshawa Generals with a +3 rating this season.

In general, a defence corps that was lauded around the league for being as solid and deep as anyone's, lacks the star that can make a difference with breakout passes, rushes and, most important, running the power play.
Luc Bourdon's death last summer exposed the Canucks' glaring lack of depth on the farm, unless you happen to be a huge fan of Nathan McIver or Zack FitzGerald.
Shane O'Brien was a nice pickup for the sixth spot, but the Canucks can't go with Ossi Vannannen and/or Rob Davison as regulars next season.
Jay Bouwmeester will be costly, for the same reason Brian Campbell gets $7.143 million from Chicago.
• Special teams were an enigma.
The power play isn't going to get much better without the acquisition of a mobile, puck moving defenceman and it was pretty good as is in the playoffs, scoring at 25 per cent.
