It's the curse of Canucks drafting...When we draft someone who's supposed to be really good, they become a bust. And when we draft what we think is a bust, we go and trade them and they become good. It's the way it's always been.

But Gillis and his coach refused to use the injury as an excuse for Hodgson's sub-par camp.
"He's been cleared to play for 10 days and we're in a time frame now where things need to get better," Gillis said. "He needs to show that he is ready and capable of participating at this level on a good team." (Vancouver Province)

He will be there. He was there best player last year and that team also had James Van Riemsdyk and Colin Wilson. On top of that he was their captain. It's just a slow start for him. Kinda like what happens to Luongo every damn year

I was thinking the same, but he only has one year on Schroeder, and although they really are two different players, Schroeder has been hyped up a lot more IMO than White ever was. I just have this crapty feeling that White could put up 35pts and 15-20 goals this year...good for him, but I would be choked!...although I would still make that trade anyday with SJ to get Erhoff - that guy is a stud on our back end and has some potential to still unlock.

3G 3A in 8 games and strong plus/minus
Schroeder:
5A in 8 games and weak +/-.
I kind of wished we still had White even though Ehrhoff is becoming a great player for us.
Even though he never panned out like everyone was expecting, I always had a soft spot for him since he got treated so badly a aprt of me wanted to see him succeed. I really hope he does turn out to be a good player for SJ.
On a side note, maybe SJ knew what they were doing. I'm pretty sure SJ could at least gotten something else for him, there must of been interest in Ehrhoff, especially since in Ottawa and NYR, where they have been dying for a good puck moving defensemen. SJ is a smart organization and they wouldnt just give away a good d man to a convference rival without getting a good reutn.

How did white get treated badly? The Canucks organization did everything they could to try and help him succeed, and were given nothing in return. If your talking about the fans treating him badly,I'm pretty he is oblivious to what people are saying about him on a Canucks forum.
I hope he does turn out to be a good player, I've got nothing against him. Plus he'll always be a canucks draft pick, and you never know he might decide to return some day. It's all about where the canucks are now though. We can't wait two or three more years for this guy to pan out, this team is built for winning now. Ehrhoff was probably the best possible return we could have gotten for White, and I'm stoked that we got him. He's probably my favourite defenceman on this team right now.

Good post. I always wanted White to succeed simply because of the sheer number of people on CDC who labelled him a bust, and now I find it kind of funny that White is off to a decent start after we traded him to SJ. I mean c'mon, it's only been 2 years since he was drafted and he's already been called a bust?? Really?? If we give up on players this quickly, is it any wonder why the Canucks haven't been particularly good at drafting and won a Cup? Still, you have to give something to get something in return.
I agree though, SJ wasn't just looking to dump salary and call it a deal, no matter what their cap situation was like, especially when there were likely other teams apart from the Canucks who also had Ehrhoff on their radar. But I'd still do that trade in a heartbeat anyway.
Now I hope White succeeds simply because he's with Schroeder playing for the Gophers, and if he does well they're likely going to do well too. Also I hope he has a great season just to prove all his critics and haters wrong.

Schroeder was drafted lower than expected and White was drafted ahead of expectations.
Schroeder will be a good pro.

I don't think San Jose has any plans for signing White, so if he actually turns it on and turns into a great player we may have a chance to get him back for free.

Why would you say they don't have plans to sign him? I might be a stone cold idiot but if White turns it on this year and next, Doug Wilson would have to be a complete moron to not sign the kid would he not?

By not signing him, San Jose will get a 2nd round Comp pick for him after his 4th year of College (Which is the deadline for college players). Some thinks this is the only reason why they traded Ehrhoff for someone as usless and as low in the debth charts as Patrick White was for the 2nd round pick which will be in the mid 50's apparently, but I could be wrong.

But I thought they'd have to at least make an effort to sign him first, otherwise I could see quite a few teams trading away players for prospects that have been labelled 'bust' in order to get compensatory picks just by not signing them. Or is it just me and it happens all the time? What kind of compensation do you get if you don't sign a prospect, say, from the CHL or European leagues and what deadlines would those be?
