Now I know that Montreal is Lou's home town and all, but did anybody else find it interesting that Lou annnonced Schroeder? I can't help think that this shows that Lou is going to be the cornerstone of this team for quite some time to come, and that the rumours of his long term deal may have quite a bit of legs to it.

If nothing else, a huge show of faith by Gillis and the organization to our captain...

I would also consider it as a marketing thing, Canucks' captain Roberto Luongo Montreal Native etc

I think it had a lot to do with the fact that Luongo is a french canadian, therefore he speaks french and he is one of the best players in the NHL

Welcome to Vancouver Mikael Sameulsson!

All it made me think is that he is here to stay! So happy about that.

Maybe in his new contract he might transition into management at the end, he already seems like a guy who enjoys the business side of the game.

or maybe those mobster Aquilini's offered him a stake in the team, keeping it all Italian.

Anyways those were thoughts that came to me.....very happy with the pick, and the fact Luongo was there to deliver it.

Sidenote- interesting to hear Gillis talk about where he sees the Sedins in the fall.

That was part of it but not the whole deal.

Ecce homo, ecce signum.

Behold the man, behold the proof.

most definately a good sign, what i heard... 5+ years at 8+ mill is too much, if he wants to be competitive he should consider a number closer to 6

I thought it was bold of Gillis to show him off. Kind of like saying "He's our guy, he's our captain, you can talk to him all you want, hes staying with us"

Thanks to Canuckforever00 for the sig :)

Pretty much my thoughts exactly. When they first showed the Cancuks table, and I saw Lou sitting there, I did a double-take. Then when I saw him walk up un stage, the triple-take. Standing at the podium, I was like "this is definitely a statement".

I did not get the impression Gillis was to worried about getting Sedin twins signed and I suppose next blockbuster announcements will be Luongo signs extension for less than market value same with Sedins but long term not 12 years though then Gaborik then trade and sign Bouwmeester

Its basically sealed the deal (literally).

AV was there and could have done the whole French thing as well. I think Luongo signed a long term extension, like 6 years or something, so he wants to be a part of what the team will be in the future. Maybe the 8 million number is just what he is gonna be paid in the first year of two of the contract and it goes down from there? I'm sure the cap number will be less than 7 million. All of the best players take cuts to make their team better, I expect no less from Bobby Lui.

And yea, when I saw him I was like WTH MAN!
2009/2010 Opening Night Lineup:

D.Sedin - H.Sedin - Burrows
Shirokov - Kesler - Samuelsson
Raymond - Wellwood - Bernier
Rypien - Johnson - Hordichuk
Glass (Healthy Scratch)
Demitra (Injured Scratch)

Edler - Mitchell
Bieksa - Salo
Erhoff - O'Brien
Schneider (Injured Scratch)

Luongo
Raycroft

Did anyone else hear that he is building some incredible summer place near Merritt? A guy from Montreal/Florida doesn't build a big estate in B.C. to just go there for a month or two in the summer, unless you live and play... say 3 hours away.
Hodgson said he does not yet have full power in his right leg and is lacking explosiveness in his first couple of strides on the ice.

But Gillis and his coach refused to use the injury as an excuse for Hodgson's sub-par camp.

"He's been cleared to play for 10 days and we're in a time frame now where things need to get better," Gillis said. "He needs to show that he is ready and capable of participating at this level on a good team." (Vancouver Province)

I don't think it will be over $7.25 mil/year average... maybe lower.

Sure, you could sneeze on the guy and it would shatter his ribcage, but he's a good player who really contributes.
