I liked the Ballard - Tanev pairing. It was basically the only time Ballard was ever any good on the Canucks...

He really needs a right-handed D partner...

Weekly press notes from the Chicago Wolves website:

"Shared second on the team with 3 points (G, 2A) in three games last week ... Shares first on the Wolves and ranks first among AHL defensemen with 9 goals and ranks second on Chicago and is tied for 12th among league blueliners with 18 points in 32 games this year ... Has collected 5 points (G, 4A) during a current five-game point streak, which matches a career- and season-high"

In my eyes drouin is overrated he can score in the qmjhl but did nothing in last two gold medal games that canada lost. Fox will be better pro than him talk to me in five yrs

Gaudreau has one NHL goal whereas all your "prized" prospects have none.

ryan kesler is going to the chicago blackhawks ...       quote me on it

Regardless, it's nice to see a defensive prospect named to the All-Star Game in the AHL.

agreed, and it shows the people who have been bad mouthing him this year that he's better than they give him credit for.

Wow a 99.4mph shot! I hope that we bring him up for a game or two before the trade deadline just to see how he would handle NHL action.

Just to put things into perspective, for those who may be "disappointed" with 99.4 because it didn't break 100, and because you heard that some dude named Chara hit 108.8:

Connauton's 99.4 would be the hardest shot out of the NHL rookies that participated - 19 year old Carolina defenseman Justin Faulk took 95.9 & 93.5 and 21 year old Buffalo center Luke Adam 96.4 & 98.3. Also, he would have beat out two of the NHL veteran defensemen that took part: Dennis Wideman had only 94.6 & 95.3 and Dion Phaneuf had 96.9 & 97.9.

That is a very solid slap shot for a 21 year old defenseman, and it's only going to get better as he matures.

Totally agree. In fact only a few players in the world can get over 100. Let a lone a 21 year old. By the time he is 30 years old, he will get over 100 easily. He still has plenty of muscle to build.

Annnnnd now we know why it was so easy for Gillis to walk away when Ehrhoff wanted more than $23m over five years!

Kassian.... Taylor Pyatt 3.0

Lies. He's more of a Steve Bernier. Hopefully his talent level goes up so he can become like a Taylor Pyatt.

Thanks for that! He is faster than I realized. Like his speed and size. When you look at Tanev and Connaughton you can wonder if MG will deal for a top 4 or not.

4:14 holy sh!t this kid looks like a forward.

His skating is unreal - I never knew this about him. He really looks like he bulked up and got bigger and faster and is playing with tonnes of confidence. Able to create odd-man rushes with his speed and definitely has that great shot that everyone knew about since his Giants days.

He can really control the puck well as a defenseman. If he can pan out, that would be amazing.

I always knew Connauton was good offensively, but wow, he sure is shifty. His puck control is crazy and his shot looks like it's off the charts for such a young player. Also it seems to go straight through screens and groups of people into the twine, oddly Ehrhoff-like. Also Ehrhoff-like is his ability to join, and lead, the rush.

What I love about these highlights though is that it shows both offense and defense. His d is really improving. He's also physically present, which I love. Just leans on guys to take them down and powers past them.

Mark my words, K-Conn will be a 10+ goals, 50+ point NHL defenceman in the near-ish future.

Agreed. I really like the way KCon is active on the point during the powerplay. We could really use some mobility there to create some open lanes because the last several years it seemed like our D wouldn't move and would get their shots blocked. Ehrhoff was the most active back there and is something that we are currently missing. Good to see that KCon might be able to step up in a year or two. I do believe though that our organization is trying to groom KCon and Tanev into top 4 defensemen without them having to slug it out on the bottom pairing. Instead, have them step into a major role when they are ready after carrying the team in Chicago for a while.

Great vid once again! Seems like he has become a much more powerful skater, he can carry some real speed through the neutral zone. The only thing I find a bit concerning is that the majority of his impressive defensive plays were breaking up breakaway chances. Breakaway chances are exactly what I haven't liked about his game when I have seen him play previously. My criticism was always that his style of play--rushing the puck from the d-zone--complicates the teams positional structure and makes defensive breakdowns more probable. There isn't really enough in that video to warrant much concern, but that is something that stuck out on the defensive side of things. The offense is phenomenal.

I have been high on this kid since we drafted him. He is going to be a stud. Hopefully a 50+ point defenseman in 3 or 4 years.
