I love Schroeder I was so happy that we picked him but I came across this.

Three Oilogosphere writers did an outstanding job in their draft coverage, and if you haven't read their best posts yet, I will provide you with links.

First, though, here is an interesting comment from noted hockey writer Gare Joyce on American hot shot Jordan Schroeder, who was Vancouver's first pick.

Joyce suggested that Schroeder is no Rob Schremp, that Schroeder has good wheels, but Joyce did say that Schroeder's attitude turned off a lot of teams, thus consoling the numerous Oilers fans who believed that the talented, high-scoring Schroeder should have been the Oil's top pick at 10th overall.

Joyce first mentioned this in his Sportsnet blog, writing: "Those who might have talked themselves into disrepute: Guelph's Holland and UMinn's Schroeder. Scouts I talked to weren't much impressed."

On the HFboards, Joyce was even more tough on the 5-foot, 9-inch, 180-pound Schroeder and his conduct at pre-draft interviews: "Asked what his weaknesses were, he said he didn't have any. Said he couldn't really think of anything he needed to work on. Straight-faced.

"Asked who was going to be on his line at UMinn next season, he said that he had already told the coach who he'd play with.

"He was critical of team-mates and coaches and blamed the U.S.'s failure to win at the under-20s on everyone else except himself.

"Those are just a few examples. I could go on but won't. If you don't get the idea, then you never will."

Some hockey draft analysts loved Schroeder because he put up great scoring numbers in his first college season. Even though he was small, he looked to them like a player who might just light it up big time at the NHL level. And perhaps he still will do so. Perhaps he's a stone-cold scoring machine

But he could certainly improve his bedside manner, it would seem.

That said, Schroeder doesn't come off nearly so cocky in this interview.

Now, the first of the three excellent Oilogosphere pieces on the draft was done by Speeds of The Hockey Symposium, who alerted me to the Joyce tidbit in his post. Speeds gives his own breakdown of how the Oilers did at the draft and it's an interesting read.

Second on my list is Allan Mitchell of Lowetide, who lists the Top 20 Oiler prospects, placing Magnus Paajarvi-Svensson at the top of his new list. Next on his list are Theo Peckham, Riley Nash, Jordan Eberle, Alex Plante, Chris Vande Velde and Teemu Hartikainen. If you don't know who some of those guys are, Mitchell will tell you all you need to know.

Third, Guy Flaming at Coming Down the Pipe did a bang up job describing the thinking of the Oilers as the team went through the draft. The Oilers hadn't expected Paajarvi-Svensson to be availabe at 10th overall, and were thrilled to get him, Flaming writes.

"Pääjärvi-Svensson is an electrifying player who has speed, hands and charisma. Given a year or two, and he won't be coming to North America before the 2010-11 season, he could make for a great match with Ales Hemsky. Who Edmonton might squeeze in between them is another story."

The Oilers also wanted a defenceman, John Moore, and tried to trade for a second first round pick to get him but came up short. Moore was taken by Columbus. I could go on with Flaming's tidbits of news, but why don't you just go read his excellent post.

Ouch...

Ouch...

He is a kid. I've skated with Evander Kane a little bit and he comes off as cocky at all times. When you have the kind of talent that these kids do at such a young age, you can forgive the bravado.

In two years as a drafting General Manager I am very happy with Gillis' explanations of his selections. So I wouldn't read too much into this. Schrayder isn't even going to play a meaningful game for the organization for awhile. Let the haters hate.

Patrick Kane is a cocky little wanker...would you all take him on the Canucks? Yeah, so would I.

The same thing was talked about on the Schroeder on the Schroeder talk.

It's just a bit of confidence.

Thanks, RK.17 for the Sig!

i know a few guys in the league who are really down to earth
some dudes just have an ego, it will change once he is in the N. If he turns into a Pat Kane then that is a definite steal at 22

If teams really did pass over him because he is confident like that then they should go into another line of work....I suspect Gillis liked that edge...I know I do. Would you rather have some wet noodle afraid to say what he means or a guy like Keith Tzachuk or JR who say whatever is on their mind. Kids got balls...lets see if he can back it up...

Yea I heard the same things about the Staal Brothers.

When you know your going to the NHL whether your nice or not.

You tend to be more on the not side until a team has you under contract and your not a kid anymore, but a proffesional hockey player.

Most NHL players are VERY cocky people. I think Schroeder is no different... and he can keep that attitude so long as he doesn't become a diva.

We didn't draft him so he could be captain.. so it doesn't really matter to me if he has "attitude problems" as long as he tries his hardest and doesn't get in over his head and takes stupid penalties.

I will address all of this in my Canucks draft review article, to be published sometime this week. All I'll say now is, I wouldn't worry about it ;)

There's some substance here. I'm sure some of these guys don't want to go to certain places and will say certain things to ensure that. With Gillis' crew, maybe he spouted the words "People say I have character and integrity moving forward."

Gillis has made it quite clear that he is seeking players who excel in off-ice arenas of life, and character and leadership are paramount. I would be very surprised if he used his first pick to select a player he did not think was a "good guy". Gillis has stated that Schroeder did extremely well in the draft interviews. (that's a paraphrase, not a quote...)

Jordan is full of confidence. But kind of selfish..as he matures..he will play better. Didnt Kovalchuk have an attitude problem too?
