According to reports, the Canucks have made a qualifying offer to centre Kyle Wellwood, a restricted free agent. The offer would amount to a one-year deal for $1 million. Wellwood is elegible for salary aribitration, but he must request it by July 5 at 5 p.m. EDT.

Wellwood, 26, had a tough start to the season when his conditioning was heavily criticized at training camp, but he worked his way out of the doghouse during the season and finished with a career-high 18 goals. He also had a strong playoff in his first-ever post-season appearance.

Sweet! Really hope Wellwood comes back and play for our third line with Bernier. Solid at face-off and has nice hands.

Basically the Canucks want to retain his rights and offered him that deal. If he goes to arbitration he can get more cashola. I'd say 1.5-1.75.

Quote

Qualifying Offers
The current team must extend a "qualifying offer" to a restricted free agent to retain negotiating rights to that player.

Players who earned less than $660,000 in the previous season must be offered 110 percent of last season's salary. Players making up to $1 million must be offered 105 percent. Players making over $1 million must be offered 100 percent.

If the qualifying offer is not made, the player becomes an unrestricted free agent.

If the player rejects a qualifying offer, he remains a restricted free agent.

Quote

Salary Arbitration
A team or player can file for salary arbitration as a mechanism to settle contract disputes.

A team can take a player to arbitration once in his career, and cannot ask for a salary reduction greater than 15 percent. Players can ask for salary arbitration as often as they want.

Let him walk if he does...he is not worth more than his offer

At 1 mill, he is a good signing

Favorite all time Canuck: Bertuzzi 2002-2003 season
Most clutch all time Canuck: Linden 1994 Stanley Cup Playoffs
Most exciting all time Canuck: Pavel Bure 90's

Squeeze me, but I think Wellwood is worth a little more than 1M. Great for us if he signs, but I think 1.5-1.75M would be money well spent too. One could make worse deals...

wellwood at $1mil is a good deal i think. I think he would sign it too given that no one gave him a chance last year cept the canucks. and he played half decent for us, given that pyatt made more than him, and i thought he was a better overall player than pyatt

Really? If I was Wellwood I'd say yes, take the offer and go with it. He knows he's easily replaceable

Itd be pretty sweet to get him for 1M. I think without Sundin, a well conditioned Wellwood could be a 40 pts player. Its not like the canucks have an over abundance of offensive talent. They were one of the lowest scoring playoff teams.
