Well he was picked 163rd in the draft years back, and everyone in the thread above was going NUTS!

I'm sure it has alot to do with his stats in the KHL. I know that the rules are quite different in the KHL, so making comparisons with other stats in the NHL are a bad idea. Why is he so special and what do the KHL stats tell us?

He is a talented forward who has the potential to be a good second liner in the NHL. If he was committed to North America he would have been a last first round pick-early second round pick.
Double the trouble.

He isnt the fastest of skaters but he is very strong on his feet, with amazing hands and some of the best vision he finds the open player and sets up teammates very well. He loves to play from the outside of the ice and will crash the net to score the garbage goals. Shirokov is a player who does need the European ice to make his plays and will probably struggle on the smaller North American ice if he does so decide to make the jump.
His stats tell you he has played with his best friend Denis Parshin for his whole life and he is an above average player.

his size is an issue, but this guy has speed like no other, he's upside is that he can shoot the puck and has a bomb of a shot. Something canuck forwards are lacking. The only other reason i'd say he's not in vancouver is because his plan may be in the russian leagues.

but try name a canuck forward that has a good slapshot..

Listen to the Latvian kid, he has actually watched Shirokov live and follows the KHL. Even if you look up scouting reports from NHL scouts they say he isnt a fast skater. I trust the kid who follows the KHL more than some random Canadian who just looks at highlights.

Who wouldn't go "nuts" about a prospect, with scoring potential?

If people can go nuts after a Tommi Santala signing. Why is it hard to believe that a prospect, who they drafted, developed nicely and may turn into a valuable asset?

Thanks, RK.17 for the Sig!

How so, I have seen so many people use RSL and KHL stats as a comparison to what that player would put up in the NHL.
But in the case of Shirokov, I guess you can say his stats can be somewhat misleading, he has never played without Parshin on his side and he needs the European ice to make his plays. Can he put up top 6 numbers in the NHL, it will just depend on how well he can change his European style into the North American. If he can do that, he will find your garbage goals and put up the numbers.

If he does decide to go over to North America, after he plays in Manitoba for awhile, he would be a good linemate for the twins. He isnt fast put is strong on his feet, reads the play very well and isnt afraid to go to the net.

he was picked low because russions where having a hard time getting international clearance. otherwise he would hav gone about 28th

So can every other league that isn't the NHL but so what? Does that mean that there is no room for prospects in canucks organization? certainly not.

The only other alternate is to sign a proven NHL'er for 10x the price of what a prospect would cost. If you want a successful team, you won't be able to afford to overpay every player on your roster.

Thanks, RK.17 for the Sig!

So do you believe that from a competitive standpoint, KHL stats are just equal to NHL stats?

I mean If we put Ovechkin in the AHL for example, his stats would probably be inhuman.

I'm not putting the KHL down or anything, but I've always thought that the NHL is THE league to play in if you want competition.

I didnt say the RSL and KHL stats are equal to the NHL stats. I said you guys use the RSL and KHL stats to compare to the numbers he would put up in the NHL.
Competitive standpoint the NHL is the highest league in the world right now.
