A LOT of people on here really lover a guy that has been a plus player a whopping 2x in his career and had a monster career high of 30 points last year on a team that jumps into the play more than just about anyone.

Pass. Pass. Pass.

The guy is 23 and has only played one full season in the NHL. His career high was 40 points, pretty good for a defensman in his first full year in the NHL, wouldn't you agree.

Chicago still has to consider that they have to sign their top two guys in Kane and Toews next year who will absorb a minimum of 5-6 mil each. I only see Chicago going after some rental players to fill this years cap space so that they can sign those two next year.

Exactly.

The Blackhawks I am sure value Duncan Keith over Cam Barker at this point, and next season is when Keith is an RFA along with Toews, Kane, Ladd, and Hjalmarsson.

If we offered a 4year 12 million dollar contract to Barker I dont think they could match that if the want to keep Toews, Kane and Keith. Ballpark figure is it will probably take $15million to sign the afformentioned 3 pieces, putting their cap hit at $50m with 1 goalie, 4 defensman, and 7 forwards signed. I'm pretty sure that put them in a pretty bad spot, or thats the way I see it anyways. While they may go detroit style to knock down the cap hits, I dont see it as likely and they will be losing a lot of their guys over the next 2 years.....Im very surprised to see the signed Hossa, when they will not be able to take care of their homegrown talent.

considering that Barker himself went 4th overall, and that next years draft is supposed to be weak, i would say yes.

Where did you here this, i follow prospects pretty closely, and 2010 is going to be a good draft, comparable to 2009.

2011 is supposed to be a very weak draft, so we could wait until next year and poach Duncan Keith for a very weak 1st and 3rd.

Could we not trade Schneider for a player and someone's 2nd round pick perhaps? Or maybe Hansen (if we re-sign him) etc, etc...

Well it took the 3rd page for someone to mention it, but this is what I'm thinking as well. Probably just Schneider for Barker straight up.

Gillis will call Tallon, say that he wants to put in an offer for Barker, Tallon decides that he has no shot, so they work out a trade. Schneider could be good for 30-35 games or a 1a/1b situation.

We're all forgetting that Calder Trophy candidate Versteeg is a RFA as well. Gilles should make an offersheet for Versteeg that the Hawks will match just to put them in even more cap trouble. Then you make an offer sheet for Barker, or propose a trade. The worst case scenario is that we get Versteeg! If we get Barker, then flip Schneider for Gagne out of Philly, then our line-up could look like this:

Sedin - Sedin - Gagne
Demitra - Wellwood - Kesler
Burrows - Hodgson - Bernier
Hordichuk - Johnson - Rypien

Raymond/Grabner

Mitchell - Salo
Barker - Edler
Bieksa - O'Brien

Rome

Luongo
Sanford

Or something to that effect.

Obviously last year MG showed that he's not afraid to go through the offer sheet route, but at the same time, it seems like it's generally still a bad idea to do that. If I'm not mistaken, the Blackhawks are in need for a goalie as well and I would imagine that Schneider is in a much better position to oust Huet from the #1 spot than Luongo. If MG could somehow put together a package that would net him Barker as well as a player like Versteeg or Brouwer, both teams get valuable assets and you don't create bad blood.

As much as I would love sticking it to the Blackhawks organization, I think a trade would be better in the long run, in terms of colligiality between the GMs.

Offer sheet to Barker would be great considering they have to think about all the raises in the future, but a trade works too, and they could really use a guy like Schnider. I'd rather see Kaberle though.

Barker would be awesome....
What would be the compensation?

edit: i suppose it depends on what we offer

For some reason people on cdc do not understand how unpopular offersheets are.Not only do you lose picks but 3/4 of the rest of the g.m's in the league no longer respect you.You might say who cares right now but when you are looking to trade hardly any gm will work with you.

People on cdc need to understand that offersheet's are one of the most unpopular things to do in hockey.
