Hossa heads to Chicago

01/07/2009 3:49:54 PM

Hoping to finally land on a Stanley Cup team, Marian Hossa has hooked up with his fourth club in three years.

Hossa, who played for the Detroit Red Wings this season, signed a 12-year, 62.4-million US contract with the Chicago Blackhawks during the NHL's free-agent signing period, which began Wednesday at noon.

The veteran forward will average $5.2 million a season.

The Blackhawks also picked up another Red Wing, 27-year-old winger Tomas Kopecky, in a two-year, $2.4 million deal.

"To add [Marian and Tomas] to our exciting young core reinforces our commitment to try to win the Stanley Cup," Chicago general manager Dale Tallon said in a statement.

Hossa, 30, finished third in team scoring with the Red Wings in 2008-09 with 31 goals and 71 points.

He also added 15 points in the post-season, when the Red Wings beat the Blackhawks for the Western Conference championship.

But his decision to sign with the Red Wings rather than remain in Pittsburgh backfired in another respect.

After the Red Wings won the Stanley Cup in 2008, Hossa turned down a long-term deal from the Penguins, signing with Detroit for one year and $7.45 million.

In this year's NHL final, the Penguins ousted Detroit to take the Stanley Cup at Joe Louis Arena, and Hossa failed to score a goal in the seven-game playoff.

Detroit and the Tampa Bay Lightning were also reportedly in the running for Hossa's services.

Hossa has scored 339 goals and 719 points in 775 career games, with Ottawa, Atlanta, Pittsburgh and Detroit.

Yeah, confirmed by team1040 now.

Man, the West just got tougher.

The NW division will be a touch one to play in, that's for sure. We need another bonafide scorer and major help on the back end before the start of the season.

I didn't mind not getting Hossa back, but I didn't want him to stay in the Central Division for the next TWELVE years! Hossa, Kane, Sharp, and Toews......Wings are not garuanteed the Central title. :(

Unbelievable signing. Hossa really wants to win. He obviously feels that the Blackhawks are heading the right direction, a force that can potentially be the Pittsburgh Penguins of the West. Scary thing is, Hossa's right.

This is like a pattern guessing game out of a first grader's math book.

2008: Detroit defeats Hossa's Penguins.
2009: Penguins defeat Hossa's Wings.
2010: ________ defeats Hossa's Blackhawks.

Can you fill the blank?!

Hey guys, I have a beautiful, legit, and brand new white Linden jersey in my closet (exactly like the 2nd pic in my sig).
It's just too big for me. It's made for someone about 6'3''. Not looking to sell, but Canucks-related trades are welcomed.
Mods, if this needs to be removed, just let me know and i will.

They lose Pahlsson, Havlat, Walker, and Khabi and get Kopecky and Hossa in return. I think this makes them weaker.

Exactly. Kane, Toews and Keith will want their payday next year. As one who hates all things Chicago, this is beautiful!

He can pull a smart donkey and retire after getting paid 7.9 a year for 7 years and if the cap drops they will be screwed with resigning Toews and Kane in a few years......
The leafs suck, and everyone hates them, Just leave the forum leaf's fans, and get over it. If you agree copy and paste this to you're sig.[/b][/size]
