I like how everyone thinks it's a given that we're going to get 4 or 5 simultaneous injuries again without anyone going to LTIR (and thus removing their salary from the cap). That was a one in a million thing and I wouldn't hold your breath hoping for it to happen again.
After we sign Boyd we've got enough room for a 23 man roster. All this talk about not having any cap space just sounds like a bunch of sour grapes.

Or a legitimate scenario to explore when you have nearly $32 mill tied up in five guys.
Like sure, you can have a 23 man roster, but not a very deep one at all.
Shoe's on the other foot and you guys are saying the same thing, so.

It's gonna be funny when Edmonton finishes higher than them in the standings.

Even now the Flames are just as deep as the canucks up front. It's just your homer bias that thinks guys like Kesler, Burrows etc are better than Bourque, Glencross, etc. You put all this emphasis on a guy like Hodgson and he hasn't even played one game yet.
The Flames have a respectable top two scoring lines and a respectable bottom two. I look at the nucks roster of forwards and it doesn't seem better at all.
With a commitment to reducing goals against the loss of Cammalleri, Bertuzzi is welcomed. The Flames are built to be a low goals against team. Whether they can do that this year remains to be seen. However your judgments of depth are superficial.
Young players (Backlund, Greentree etc) will get a chance to play. It's up to them to make it. If they can skate, not be a liability and chip in some offence, that's good enough.
A young, mobile, dynamic D, that is physically tough to play against that will move the puck will help. They will be counted on to erase mistakes and transition the puck up. If you look at the Chicago series with the Flames and nucks, Chicago forced both D into turnovers and both Flame and nuck forwards were not getting the puck.
The Sedins looked so good in that series because they have the talent to own the puck up the ice. No other nuck forwards could do that and they looked ineffective. Same with Calgary.
Having said all that, Chicago and Detroit are tops in the west. I'd give the edge to Chicago because they seem deep everywhere. They have a bunch of cheap, young players in key roles who are delivering.
If I were a nucks fan (ewwww) I'd be more concerned about what kind of team they will ice, rather than the opponents lineup. Clearly strong in goal. D is iffy. Forwards don't seem that good, save for the top line.
Kesler is a nice player but he's a marginal top six guy at this point. Burrows same thing. Demitra...skilled but doesn't put any fear into people. Sundin??? Gillis valued him at $10M/ yr. You can draw your own conclusions. Wellwood is clearly talented but he really hasn't done anything consistently.
So the point is the same can be said for Calgary's forwards.
There is a lot of talk on here about Calgary's lack of depth at forward but the nucks have nothing better.
Granted the forward will not compete with a Chicago in terms of skill. Maybe strength in own zone will?

Who would you rather have.....Sjostrom or Samuelsson? That is the kind of differential you will see between the two teams offensive push this year.....don't see how anyone can argue the F-Lames are better off....but some will of course.

You have hockey confused with golf. In hockey, getting more points means you finish higher. As the Canucks will have more points than either the F-Lames and the Oilers, they will have finished higher in the standings.
Hope that makes sense.
