Moneyball is not in trades fpr older players , Moneyball is about very good drafting and being able to move those players before they start becoming UFAs that you cant afford and get more high end draft picks or high end prospects and then you keep doing this cycle

What you said has nothing to do with "moneyball".

Moneyball is about correct (based on thorough analysis) estimation of player's (to be drafted or to be traded for) ability to provide best possible result in certain position/situation.

This process allows to find and target underestimated (and thus relatively cheap) players ...
Love your enemies - it will drive them crazy ...

Really? Why Alberts? If we didn't qualify SOB and didn't have Bieksa, then sure. But slow, hard hitting defensive defensemen aren't what we need. And at his likely price, we should have just gone out and resigned Ohlund.
Auger's mistake wasn't singling out Burrows, or even approaching him before the game.
His mistake was calling the hit Burrows dived on based on the injury he though he sustained.
Bettman and the NHL want to stop headshots period, not just the injuries sustained.
Punish based on the offense, the action taken, not the injuries sustained.

Every team needs a guy like Alberts on their blueline..makes shifty forwards think twice about dangling over the blueline when you have players like Alberts who keep them honest with huge hits.

Ever since Ohlund stopped taking the body...The Canucks don't really have anybody who consistently takes the body, Alberts would be a great fit.

Alberts = puck turnover machine. He hits a lot but doesn't fight. Sort of like Komisarek.

I kind of think MG likes to promote internal competition, in order to make the players he has play their best. For example last year going into training camp he had Krog Wellwood and Hodgson who are all obviously centres with skill who aren't very big. Wellwood was the winner and he had a good year. Now he has Rome to push SOB and this rumour about Alberts if true would probably just slide into a little 3 way duel with those two.

Can't say I disagree with the philosophy. Makes for a pretty good chance at finding diamonds in the rough if you ask me.

Rather have O'Brien.....more of an offensive upside.

Andrew Alberts, a 6'-5" depth defenseman from Philly.

Slow, penalty-prone, stay-at-home guy who will hit and hit and hit all game long. He'll fight too, but he's not great at it.

I saw that at hockeyfights too... all his fights started becaus he levelled some forward coming into his zone. He then proceeded to lose most of the fights.

For a fairly cheap price this is exactly what we need for a bottom 6th-7th D man. This kind of role player is useful just to give snipers second thoughts about just rushing in full speed into our zone (like they did with impunity last year). If you paid attention last year, the some of best hits were actually given out by Salo which is insane. That is what the whole O'Brien controversy was about, he was asked to be way more physical and make the other team scared of getting hit.

Signing doesn't mean they all make the roster. We probably need to sign at least a couple more of these guys so that we can have some evaluation at training camp and early in the season. You just waive the guys who don't work out.

We need this because we basically have zero AHL call-ups who can play in the NHL right now.
