There may be a number of reasons that Rypien was chosen offer Hansen.
1. Gillis wants toughness on this team, especially on the fourth line
2. Hansen has more trade value
3. We already have Raymond
Even though Hansen has a lot more offensive potential, the team would not be physical enough without the fighters.

Exactly right. As prospects turn into players, they have to keep moving up the depth chart or they will be overtaken by newer prospects. Hansen has been developed into a serviceable NHL winger, but his prospects with the Canucks look to have stalled.
That doesn't mean he won't continue to improve in another organization though.
Another similar story from the 90's was a defenceman turned winger named Scott Walker...........and he ended up with a nice career in the NHL.

Your right. When you look at the forwards I suspect that Demo is more of a writeoff than most, particularly if Raymond comes back in the fall with 10 pounds more. The fact that fans write off Hanson after his rookie season is laughable. He can be sereviceable on eith the 3rd or 4th line. The same way that Raymond, Bernier and Wellwood can be spotted up onto the top 2 lines when required.

Almost screws up the first signing he makes that would cripple the team.
Imagine Sundin for 10 million this year.
Sign Sedins to a cap hit that cripples us to make any moves this year.
12 year 55 million they would have signed right away.
8,8,8,8,5,5,4,4,2,( They retire this year)1,1,1,
4.5833 cap hit.
leaves us 14 million to work with to really fix our need for a puck moving defenseman plus a top 6 winger.
He chooses Rypien over Hansen. this guy is brutal!
As far as the contract Gillis signed the twins to... He was handcuffed by the owners, as the Aquillini's do not like the long term deals(I think they see big numbers and get scared).

Out of the 1,000 potential and active NHLers Hansen is average. Plain and simple.

nobody is crying or is desperate to hold on to either Jaffray or Hansen.
However Canucks fans are smart enough to relize when a servicable and cheap players are about to be lost or are lost.

Servicable and cheap players are lost and subsequently replaced all the time. Not worth the energy people expend discussing them.
Bottom line is stop worrying about the 3rd and 4th liners, they're easily replaced. It's your top 6 that logs the icetime and is relied upon. There is nothing top 6 about Hansen, and I mean that with all due respect. The guy is a canuck so I'm behind him, but put him on a pedestal? I will not.
