The Minnesota Wild announced Friday that the club has signed defenceman Shane Hnidy to a one-year contract.

Hnidy, 33, tallied 12 points in 2008-09 with the Boston Bruins, with 45 penalty minutes.

Hnidy has played 477 games over nine NHL seasons with Ottawa, Nashville, Atlanta, Anaheim and Boston, totaling 57 points and 565 PIM. The 6-foot-2, 204-pound native of Neepawa, Manitoba, was Buffalo's seventh-round pick (No. 173 overall) in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.

Good signing.
He's a nice solid depth guy.

All of our divisional teams continue to improve.

As much as I like Hnidy, we already have SOB who is basically the same player.

And even though SOB is a whipping-boy here on CDC, I am a big fan of his.

Adding Hnidy would have been redundant, especially after we sign Beauchemin...

Hnidy is a better defenseman than Rome.

Edler point prediction: 12 goals, 33 assists and 45 points / Edler point counter: 0 goals, 7 assists and 7 points.

I'm really hoping that Gillis gets Kurtis Foster - so this is great news. (Every defenseman the Wild sign makes it less likely that Foster is coming back.)
Teams that had a more successful year than the Canucks:
Pittsburgh Penguins, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks, Carolina Hurricanes...
...That's it.

Kessel will put up less points than Wellwood this year. CALLING IT.
