Compensation a first and a third round pick
and become a parriah i think working a trade that wont piss off the other GMs is a better idea. last summer he pissed of st louis and it cost us and keivn lowe still finds himself short on friends because of the penner deal and he looks like an donkey. i want the guy to im sure there is a deal to be had.

Usually, I'm preaching cap space and long term viability, but in this case it's worth it, especially if it's through UFA and not an offer sheet. Mitchell and Salo come off the books (I highly doubt Salo will be back, at least not for $3.5 million) and I'd like to extend Mitchell, but we can hope he'll accept a deal close to where he is at now, or at least not higher than $4 million to stay in Vancouver. But that still leaves us a defenceman short and adding Barker now would be a great solution. He'd give us a pretty good looking defensive group for this year, as well as stability for about the same money next season as well when the contracts of two of our top four defenders expire.
The only reason I'm on board for this deal as opposed to others in regards to cap space is because this one fills a need both now and in the long term, and it makes sense financially both now and in the long term. Those two things are huge in my opinion, and most proposals I see address one or the other, but not both.

It baffles me the number of people on cdc that don't understan how unpopular offersheets are.You lose picks aswell as losing all the respect of every other gm in the league.

Chicago wont be able to keep everyone, especially with Kane and Toews being RFA's next year. So maybe we can trade for him instead, but if we can't our only option will be an offer sheet. And the picks wont be that hard to swallow since it would in the late 20's in a pretty weak draft next year.

yes thats right you trade for his rights.Once you start giving offersheets to players most other gm's in the league will not like to trade with you,it is considered a low blow.
Remember how mad we were when Bobby Clarke did it with Kesler and all the stuff we said about Clarke, yet now you are prepared to be the one to do it this time.
In my mind the worse thing mg did when he took over was offer Backes an offersheet, plus it also made us pay Bernier more because the blues did it to us.With that said though mg knew what he was doing Backes is a stud

Offer sheets are legal and completely within the rules.
But with that said, Barker might go to UFA anyways, so this whole discussion would be rendered pointless.

But just to let you know budz I would really like Barker I just don't like offer sheets cause teams don't forget those things.
I dunno...how many trades will the Canucks do with Chicago over the years anyway? Not many. MG's obligation is to the fans, the players and ownership. I see no problem raiding a division rival because they were stupid and overspent. I say pull the trigger.

Why?? The guy might be a UFA, why bother giving up assets for him? Especially valuable assets. Just sign him.
