Well if the league determines the players go to UFA because of the Hawks sloppiness regarding qualifying offers, we may not need to use an offer sheet anyways, we can just sign him.

Usually, I'm preaching cap space and long term viability, but in this case it's worth it, especially if it's through UFA and not an offer sheet. Mitchell and Salo come off the books (I highly doubt Salo will be back, at least not for $3.5 million) and I'd like to extend Mitchell, but we can hope he'll accept a deal close to where he is at now, or at least not higher than $4 million to stay in Vancouver. But that still leaves us a defenceman short and adding Barker now would be a great solution. He'd give us a pretty good looking defensive group for this year, as well as stability for about the same money next season as well when the contracts of two of our top four defenders expire.

The only reason I'm on board for this deal as opposed to others in regards to cap space is because this one fills a need both now and in the long term, and it makes sense financially both now and in the long term. Those two things are huge in my opinion, and most proposals I see address one or the other, but not both.

Finally, someone shows a good post. Thank you!!!!!

I don't care how good Kopitar gets, I will never believe that drafting Luc Bourdon was a mistake. Never.

I dunno...how many trades will the Canucks do with Chicago over the years anyway? Not many. MG's obligation is to the fans, the players and ownership. I see no problem raiding a division rival because they were stupid and overspent. I say pull the trigger.

Its not just the hawks, its also all the other gm's in the league that would say F#$! U to gillis.Like I said before offersheets are an unpopular thing.

edit:division rivals???I will assume thats a typo.

Yes to the typo...

I agree offer sheets are not popular. But sometimes they are necessary for the good of your team. I still say no smart GM would ever pass on a deal he felt was good for his team just because one of his peers made an offer sheet to an RFA. Business is business.

On another note, does anybody know how many offer sheets have been signed thus far in 2009? Maybe the GMs carved out some sort of temporary moratorium on offers because there haven't been many or any that I've heard of.

NHL rules state that an RFA player must be tendered a qualifying offer before July 1st in order for the team to retain their rights. If they are not given qualifying offers, they become UFAs. Chicago made an error in filing qualifying offers to several players and the offers weren't properly submitted. League and NHLPA are both investigating the situation, and there's a chance they could render the qualifying offers invalid. If that happens, the RFAs become UFAs, because they technically weren't given a qualifying offer as per league rules. Notable players in this group: Kris Versteeg and Cam Barker.

There might be no need for an offer sheet. Just let this get sorted out, and hopefully we can nab Barker from unrestricted free agency.

~ basically saying that if the NHL tries to sweep it away, the NHLPA will file a grievance to take it to a hearing.

~ Sorta looks like they'll be UFAs by the end of it all, so we actually have a shot at both Barker & Versteeg...
When your Western team plays your Eastern team, is it win/win or lose/lose????
