So weve all heard the talks about tavares and hodgson battling for the calder, but what about shirokov? say he makes the team and plays up to potential, shouldnt he be the first choice. And second of all can he wn it? Im not to sure about the rulings, idk if hes to old or what. Any one with help on the rules for the calder will be appreciated

If he plays with the Sedins he's going to win the calder.

Shirokov for Calder??

Good grief people, it's preseason! Yes he's looked good so far, but has he even played against a full NHL roster yet??

Let's see if he makes the team first. Then let's see where he ends up in the lineup. Then let's see how he handles the NHL level standard of play. Then let's see if he's still putting up points and being as impressive as he is in the preseason so far.

Until all that has happened, don't get ahead of yourselves. Mentioning Calder candidates right now is a futile exersize. Remember last season at this point, it was a 2 horse race between Stamkos and Turris. If you had mentioned Kris Versteeg, Steve Mason, Derick Brassard, Pekka Rinne, Blake Wheeler.... you would have been laughed at.

But it is a realistic statement when you consider that he's a bit older, and he's been playing with men in the khl

Why can't we predict him for Calder, everyone else is predicting players for it and you're not yelling at them

Where did I yell?

I'm just choosing to be realistic and use some rational thinking and logic before I start claiming our player will win the Calder because he's having a strong preseason. Predict him all you want, but like I said, don't get ahead of yourselves. Hype is exactly that, hype. Substance is what wins the Calder. I want to see who brings that before I make Calder predictions. But that's just me. If you're happy with hype, then by all means. ;)

he definitely has a shot at winning it especially if he plays on the 1st or 2nd lines. i don't know the exact rules but i'm pretty sure he's eligible. the sedins played for MoDo, Ovechkin and Malkin played in Russia, etc. but they all still counted as being NHL rookies. So there shouldn't be a problem with SS being eligible

Nope. But he also hasn't played with a full NHL roster yet. Exciting times we find ourselves in.

Exactly.

Two words: Bill Muckalt.

Remember him?

He flew right out of the gate during preseason and the early season, and was rookie of the month in October or November or something... and then he plummeted and was never heard from again.

I'm shocked that this thread took this long to happen. I mean, really, it took THREE WHOLE PRE-SEASON GAMES for it to happen. Plan the parade!
Don't talk about it... Do it!!!

Shirokov and Hodgson will both get nominated, and if Oberg makes the team he might get one too.

I believe there are only three nominations handed out. John Tavares will undoubtedly have one of those spots locked up.

We could have all three nominations, the winner, and people around here would still have a problem with it.

I think that I read somewhere that he's not actually eligible to be nominated to win the Calder. Can't remember the reasons so I'm probably wrong, but if anyone can tell me that would be good.

I don't think he will win Calder, maybe 30-50 points tops, look for Tavares to get around 60...
