Wind Warning for Coastal British Columbia

Active for next 16 hours

Locations: Metro Vancouver; Greater Victoria; Southern Gulf Islands; East Vancouver Island; West Vancouver Island.

Northwest winds up to 80 km/h will develop this evening.

This is a warning that potentially damaging winds are expected or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

A low pressure system over the BC Central Interior this morning will strengthen as it moves southward to the southern interior this afternoon. Associated with the system northwest winds of up to 80 km/h will develop over parts of the BC South Coast. The winds are expected to ease early Saturday morning as the system moves southward to Washington state and weakens.

Wind Warning for Coastal British Columbia

Active for next 15 hours

Locations: Metro Vancouver; Greater Victoria; Sunshine Coast; East Vancouver Island; West Vancouver Island; North Vancouver Island; Central Coast - coastal sections

Strong southeast winds tonight for the Central Coast and parts of the inner South Coast.

Strong west to northwest winds late Saturday for West Vancouver Island Victoria and Vancouver.

This is a warning that potentially damaging winds are expected or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..listen for updated statements.

A low pressure system is deepening as it approaches coastal British Columbia. The associated warm front is spreading rain along the coast rain will intensify tonight over the South Coast as the warm front passes and the cold front sweeps through. Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley and Howe Sound are expected to receive 50 mm tonight while higher elevations in these regions may see more. Meanwhile, in Whistler it will be cold enough for snow instead of rain. Snowfall amounts of 15 cm are expected for Whistler tonight.

Strong southeast winds ahead of the low are occurring over the Central Coast, north and East Vancouver Island, and Sunshine Coast this evening as the system approaches. The Central Coast and North Vancouver Island can expect winds of 80 to 100 km/h while East Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast expect winds of 60 to 80 km/h. The winds will ease during the overnight hours as they shift to gusty southwest winds.

Behind the strong frontal system tonight, another low is forecast to cross the British Columbia South Coast late Saturday. In the wake of the low strong northwesterly winds are forecast to develop in a cool and unstable airmass. Areas of West Vancouver Island Greater Victoria and Metro Vancouver exposed to west or northwest winds will be most affected with sustained winds of 60 to 80 km/h and gusts to 90 to 100 developing late in the afternoon Saturday.

Really windy outside right now. The power almost went out and lost internet connection for around 10 minutes.

Locations: Sunshine Coast; East Vancouver Island; Greater Victoria; Southern Gulf Islands; Metro Vancouver

Strong winds that may cause damage are expected or occurring.

A developing low over the Pacific will approach the South Coast this evening. Strong southeast winds of 70 to 80 km/h will develop over Metro Vancouver, Greater Victoria, the Southern Gulf Islands, East Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast this evening ahead of the low. Winds will ease overnight as the low moves into the Interior.

Wind warnings are issued when there is a significant risk of damaging winds.

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required. Please monitor local media or Weatheradio. Email reports of severe weather to pacificstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet with the hashtag #BCStorm.
