I laugh at what people call metal. If there's no double kicks or screaming, it's not metal. Here's a good example of metal (the 30 second mark is quite excellent):

???

There are several different sub-genres of metal. Death Metal is not the only kind that is classified as real metal music.

Metal has been around since the late 1960's, nothing back then sounded even remotely close to what you think is "real metal".

That's not even close to death metal. It's metalcore.

The elitism of the more intolerant metalheads is amusing to this old codger (who remembers when the first Sabbath LP came out).

As someone who works in the music industry I find most metal to be pretty bad but the stuff I like I like a lot (stuff like Coalesce which adepts tell me is "math metal"or the Locust who are pretty undefinable so I chose "other" in the poll). Silly lyrics don't help (good thing I can't hear most of them intelligably). There is no genre of music that seems to attract fewer female fans nor is there a worse genre of music when it comes to tipping bartenders (even punk rockers and shrub folkies tip better). I have never heard of a gay metal band ever nor have I heard of a socialist/Marxist metal band (anybody know of any?). The thing that should worry the "true" metalheads is that it sure seems that metal has painted itself into a corner stylistically; you can only scream (or growl) so loud and put so many de-tuned strings on you guitar before it simply becomes noise. The only place left to go is backwards it seems. As a lover of literally every style of music I consider metal to be electric chamber music; tightly arranged with minimal improvisations (wanky solos mostly). Wish there was more metal out there I liked but too much of it is reactionary teen death fantasy goth crapola. Not for nothing did the Cannibal Corpse box set come with a comic book.

Just bought the new Gojira album and it is by far my favorite album of this year so far. Phenomenal from start to finish.

I'm also really hoping that Randy Blythe gets freed in time to still play the Lamb of God/Dethklok/Gojira show in Vancouver, although hope seems to be lost. Postpone it maybe, but I just hope they don't cancel the show all together. I would still go just to see Dethklok and Gojira. God, I was looking forward to that show so much...

I think that all goes back to when people were trying to make a distinction between "metal" and "hard rock" and it just kept going from there with the addition of "hair metal," "punk" and "progressive" styles of music. What people tend to forget is that all of these things still fall under the main heading of "metal" (yes even the majority of "hard rock" bands still fall under that when talking about bands like AC/DC, early Aerosmith, Def Leppard, etc.) because of bands like Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, etc. all becoming big around the same time (late 60s/early 70s... before there was category called "metal.")

I love the music tracks, MAIDEN666. No offence intended, but, you do need a better singer and a better mix on the vox.

Good luck with the EP! :)

I just picked up the 1987 Testament album "The Legacy" on Vinyl yesterday.

If you like early Metallica, Megadeth, check this out:

ah Testament... one of the bands that came out just a hair too late to be put in with "the big 4" thrash bands. They've always been "hit or miss" with me. Some of their songs I really liked, others.. not so much.
