Everybody's drooling over Callahan. But what would it take to get him? How about Edler? I know, he's the cornerstone of our defense. But NYR has a talented young defense of their own in need of a little more experience, and what if they threw in Del Zotto? Let's see how it works.

To Van: Del Zotto, rights to Ryan Callahan
To NYR: Edler, Tanev

NYR
FORWARDS
Artem Anisimov ($1.875m) / Brad Richards ($6.666m) / Brandon Dubinsky ($4.200m)
Wojtek Wolski ($3.800m) / Marian Gaborik ($7.500m) / Sean Avery ($1.937m)
Mats Zuccarello-Aasen ($1.750m) / Brian Boyle ($1.700m) / Michael Rupp ($1.500m)
Ruslan Fedotenko ($1.400m) / Erik Christensen ($0.925m) / Derek Stepan ($0.875m)
Brandon Prust ($0.800m) / / Ryan Bourque ($0.900m)

DEFENSEMEN
Marc Staal ($3.975m) / Alexander Edler ($3.250m)
Mike Sauer ($1.250m) / Daniel Girardi ($3.325m)
Tim Erixon ($1.750m) / Chris Tanev ($0.900m)
Ryan McDonagh ($1.300m)

GOALTENDERS
Henrik Lundqvist ($6.875m) / Martin Biron ($0.875m)

BUYOUTS: Chris Drury ($3.716m)
CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $527,000

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $63,572,834; BONUSES: $2,410,000
CAP SPACE (23-man roster): $727,166

Van:

FORWARDS
Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Marco Sturm ($2.250m)
Ryan Callahan ($3.500m) / Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)
Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m) / Manny Malhotra ($2.500m) / Mason Raymond ($2.550m)
Chris Higgins ($1.900m) / Maxim Lapierre ($1.000m) / Jannik Hansen ($1.200m)
Mark Mancari ($0.525m) / Andrew Ebbett ($0.525m)

DEFENSEMEN
Kevin Bieksa ($4.600m) / Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m)
Keith Ballard ($4.200m) / Sami Salo ($2.000m)
Andrew Alberts ($1.225m) / Aaron Rome ($0.750m)
Michael Del Zotto ($1.087m) / Alexander Sulzer ($0.700m)

GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) / Cory Schneider ($0.900m)

CARRY-OVER BONUS PENALTY: $15,000

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $64,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $62,960,833; BONUSES: $212,500
CAP SPACE (24-man roster): $1,339,167

This leaves NYR very tight to the salary cap. They would likely need to send back or waive another player, but I need to head back to work now.

That's a terrible deal, even if we get Callahan. We give up two important defenders. Edler is our #1 guy. Our blueline is pathetic if this went through.

No way.

The Rangers would do it in a heartbeat. They need to bolster their blueline, and they have a plethora of forwards.

good size (6-1,227), responsible defensively, good character, doesn't take dumb penalties (12 PIM last year in 73 games), 10-12 goal potential.
he is getting up in age though (36) and he made 1.5 mil last year.

maybe 1 year, 1 mil? thoughts

He's old and will want a fair bit of money, but I've personally hoped the Canucks would sign him each time he became UFA for a number of years now. Since he was probably 32. 36 though is quite a significant age for someone that takes as physical a beating as a defensive-minded grinder-ish player like Grier.

I would be interested, but it would be another contract to add to our list, that would take away from our cap. If we didn't have as many 4th liners signed to NHL contracts as we do, I would be more inclined.

He's a solid role player, don't get me wrong, but I think signing Hansen and Oreo should be a top priority before anything else.

agreed, nuckle. signing hansen and oreo should come first. i'm hoping 1.2-1.4 mil for hansen, but knowone is talking about oreo. what would he get, 625k?

Grier wouldn't be bad, but I'm not particularly interest really. There are better options.

As stated above, I'd rather have Hansen and Oreskovich signed first then worry about UFAs.

After Hansen and Oreo are signed I wouldn't mind seeing this guy on a depth or 4th line role.

It's a fair trade, I think or at least fairly close (maybe a bit better for New York). But do you really want to get rid of our number 1 (by far) defenseman for a player that would play on the 2nd line here?

Also, this leaves us very thin on the blueline, so we'd need to make another deal and I think that would just be too much (impact) player movement from a team that just made it 1 game away from the cup.

Bieksa - Hamhuis
Salo - Ballard
DZ - Rome
Alberts, Sulzer

Doesn't really cut it, especially if Salo (or anybody else) sustains an injury.

3-4 years ago I'd be all over this. Grier was always slow as heck though and his gas tank is real close to being empty.

No no and no
edler out future #1 d-man
tanev has the potential to become a solid top 4 d-men
and you are trading 2 top 4 d-man
for 1 top 4 d-man and the rights of a top 6 forward...
not going to happen

To Vancouver:
Zach Parise

To New Jersey:
Cody Hodgson
Mason Raymond

I think this is a good fair trade. Raymond is a good young forward and Hodgson is most likly going to develop into a top 6 forward. We get Parise. He's a sniper who would be great witht he sedins.

Sedin-Sedin-Parise
Burrows-Kesler-Higgins
Hansen-Malholtra-Samuelsson
Bitz-Lapiere-Sturm

Scratches:Oreshvik,Ebbet,Mancarci

Great depth for our top 6 and bottom 6.

A unproven prospect and a guy currently wearing a backbrace for one of the best scorers in the NHL.

Seems fair...

Throw in Schneider and then NJ will be interested.

Edit : You want to put Parise on the 1st line with the Sedins ??

When we need a top 6 player for Kesler to play with, Come on buddy.....

also i know Kesler needs a top 6 but Parise would be a hell of a sniper with the sedins but he is interchangable with Burrows.

There's probably no way we land Parise unless Schneider is the main asset going the other way or trading a valuable piece on this team.

This is what they're thinking Parise > Raymond + Hodgson, because I think their main need as of now is a new franchise goaltender. Brodeur is getting too old, he may call it quits after this coming season and its still unknown if he can withstand another full season. Unless Schneider is part of the package I don't think they'll even think about moving a guy like Parise. Although I'd LOVE to have him on the 2nd line with Kesler.
