How I Met Your Mother

Last nights episode was.. meh.. I really wish they would just move the story along. And to think, I thought the show was called "How I Met Your Mother".. not "How Your Father Likes To Divulge into Unrelated Events & Stories Which Don't Tie In To The Story of How He Met Your Mother."

I thought last nights episode was well, rather terrible. A few funny skits, but that was about it. Nothing too great. Barney and Ted showing that being there for your friend involves acting inappropriately at a funeral ceremony. Robyn playing to everyone's fix and not being able to take full responsibility for her actions. And yet, once again, nothing changed between Lily and Marshals mother. Nothing new, she's never been able to take a stand for herself when confronted by Marshals mother. And Marshal overreacting to the whole "last words" speech. If you're going to remember someone only for their last words, then well, good on you.

Yawn..

What was the point of your post? You're not even contributing to the thread. The episode was quite predictable from start to finish. I didn't find it the least bit entertaining. Now, the least you could have done is offer a valid response. Which, once again, you've failed to do. Thanks?

Last night's episode was fantastic. It made me cry. Second episode in a row...and I don't usually cry in movies or tv shows! Marshall's last word speech was touching. That's the part that got me. The ending was spectacular. Made a whole plot line for a couple more episodes, and will show a different side to Barney. Am I the only one who has liked season 6 so far? I know it doesn't have a lot to do with the Mother. We've seen like 2 or 3 episodes revolving around her, right? I've still enjoyed it. Not all episodes have to be about the Mother. People just say to me like, "ugh, why have these episodes about Marshall, Barney, Robin, Lily, etc..." Its called character development.

Take a show like I dunno...Smallville for an example. That show has been running for 10 years. Its a story about Clark Kent becoming Superman. Not all episodes have been about him. There have been a lot of episodes about Chloe, Lana, Johnathan and Martha, Lex, Lionel, Oliver Queen, Lois, Tess...etc. We know a lot about these characters because of character development. People say "Whats the point of knowing the story about Chloe? Tess? Lana? etc" Its important to the story of how CK becomes Superman. If you don't know about the characters, whats the point of them being there?

I understand that I am comparing a comedy to an adventure/sci-fi. But I'm just saying that character development is very important, and maybe all these background story lines about Barney, Lily, Robin and Marshall correlates with Ted meeting the mother.

I can't believe people still watch smallville. that show jumped the shark in it's 3rd season, how are new episodes being made?

I've enjoyed all of this season of HIMYM though.

The episode was bad. We hardly knew Marshal's father, so I didn't feel connected to his character whatsoever. Marshal's speech about last words was in a sense touching, but not what I am seeking to get out of this show. The jokes in the episode were decent, with some good highlights. My list of character development interests is this: Ted > Barney > Marshal > Lily > Robin

If this show is trying to dive into emotional areas, it certainly didn't give sufficient background for me to feel that way. But, I understand this show is banking off of its popularity, and killing time (and evidently, characters) before it gets to the main point of the show (and loses viewers' interest). Therefore, they jump around different topics and occasionally string together a subpar episode. That episode: 6/10.

Oh, I thought this was a discussion thread.

Some of you really are unappreciative of comments that don't coincide with your own. It's not as if I don't say why I dislike the show. Hopefully none of you apply for careers that involve working in a group.

Anyways, last night's episode needs more uplifting moments. They always go off on this particular theme, and at the end of the show, they loop all the way back to the start without a decision, and you're back to square 1 (ex. Marshal and Lily thinking of a child's name, holy hell did I hate that). I would consider those episodes investments. They avoid having a declarative episode, because in the future, they can jump back to it. For the writers, it's brilliant, for the viewers, it is irritating.

Don't worry - I got your back.

It still comes as a surprise to me that nobody here can take criticism. It shouldn't come as a surprise to me that not a single person in this thread could actually critique my post. Instead, you've chosen to jump to insults, or giving me negative rep. Nothing in this world is all rainbows and butterflies, sunshine and lollipops. I'm not going to lie for your benefit, I'm going to continue to give my honest opinion.

To be honest I would argue that Smallville is more enjoyable than How I Met Your Mother. Unlike Smallville, HIMYM is taking it's sweet time in advancing the storyline. It pays less attention to the major character, and more attention to side-characters. The show, after all, is called "How I Met Your Mother". However, HIMYM has succeeded in milking it's audience, and riding off its popularity. At least with Smallville, the character development and character progression was handled much more smoothly.

I find HIMYM a lot like friends. Or most sitcoms for that matter. Little story progression, with big episodes interspersed. If you're looking for a lot of character or story progression, I would suggest not watching a sitcom.

I think Lifetime may be better suited for Hockey!?'s viewing interests. lots of "deep" character development there for him, or so I've heard.

Once again you've managed to come up with another non-constructive post. The last I checked, this thread was for the discussion of the show "How I Met Your Mother". Therefore, any and all comments are welcome. Whether or not said posters are in favor of the series, or of a episode. What you have shown to me, time and time again, is that you are incapable of taking comments or criticism. Rather, your response to anyone who openly disagrees with you is to make idiotic remarks. Your immaturity clearly knows no bounds. Now, if you would be so kind, get back on topic.

Friends was the story of five individuals living in New York. Therefore, side-story lines, and shows which centered around each of the main cast were expected. HIMYM is the story of how Ted Mosby meets his future wife, as he tells the story to the children. It's been six seasons and we know little about the mother. And yes, I feel they have taken their time in regards to that whole progression. I never once said I dislike the show, there are episodes I enjoy. However, as we have past the mid season point in season six, they have done nothing but milk their popularity. And for that, I'm disappointed because most of these episodes are rather, well, uncomical.

There were 6 'friends': Joey, Chandler, Ross, Rachel, Monica, Phoebe. ( I'm annoyed that I know that because I hated that show)

You are basically saying - that there should be NO character development of anyone, other then Ted meeting his future wife.

I personally like HIMYM because of episodes like this, that they show that these are real people going through real life situations.

(Personally I know exactly what Marshall went through when my father passed away, and I know that my friends were exactly like Ted/Barney etc and have no idea what to do)

I could watch this show until Season 10 without meeting the mother, and I'd be okay with it because of the character development and stories that have been created with these 5 characters

Once again you're showing your pretentious nature, talking down to others of dissenting opinion and overreacting to a very mild joke made at your expense. What you have shown to me, time and time again, is that you are an elitist pessimist with no sense of humour who shouldn't be watching a sitcom in the first place. You complain for the sake of complaining and then lash out when people disagree with you in your assessment/complaint. You especially like to claim others are reacting how you, yourself, reacted. My advice to you? lighten up, pull that metaphorical stick out of your metaphorical colon and try enjoying life for once.

As for the complaint about Ted telling any sort of side story, he already told his parents he vowed to tell his kids the ENTIRE story about how he met his wife, and not just the main story. Everything he tells them will fit into the main storyline and have some form of importance, and while it may not be revealed right now, it will most likely come into play later on in the series. The complaints about one of their better non-comedy-heavy episodes was completely unwarranted, in my opinion. Taking the episode based solely on that specific episode's merits, I think it was fairly well done, and only a jaded individual, such as yourself, would find it hard to empathize or relate.

Once again, refer to the title of the show, How I Met Your Mother. The show is in its sixth season and there has been enough time allotted to the character development of Barney, Marshal, Lily and Robyn. However, they have spent little time focusing on Ted's character this season. And that is where I think the show has gone wrong. They are spending too much time focusing on the other side characters, and little time on Ted.

But the side characters, and their experiences with ted, helped with Ted meeting his wife. It showed that Ted was clearly affected by the passing of Marshal's dad, and Marshal's experience influenced Ted. It all ties into the story in one way or another.
