Although at times Luongo has shown that he has elite skill, his consistency is a cause for concern. With all due respect, it is doubtful that Luongo can be considered one of the top goaltenders in the NHL, and one can easily make the case that he is one of its most overpaid players. In a league with a salary cap, a bad contract can cripple a team's ability to stay competitive. Moreover since Luongo contract is for 12 more years, the future does not look good for Vancouver. By the time the NTC on Luongo's contract expires, chances are good he would be an unmovable baggage to the team.

Edit: Luongo's cap hit of $5.3 million a year is due to the fact that it is for 12 years. When considering cap hits, one also needs to keep in mind the duration of the said contract. It is common practice for players to agree to discounts when given long term contracts, as they give players more security. For the team however, long term contracts can backfire, and potentially cripple a franchise - Alexei Yashin and the Islanders. When Luongo's contract expires, he would be 42, and most likely have spent the last few years of his contract as a backup - the way he has been playing, it might be sooner than what most expect. Therefore, when considering Luongo's contract for its entire duration, one cannot help but to come to a conclusion that Luongo is, in fact, overpaid.

And, I do agree that at times Luongo has shown world class skill. However, my concern is his consistency, or lack of. Luongo's inconsistency, demonstrated throughout this season and last year's playoffs, is unacceptable for a goalie of his repertoire.

And also, there is no need for obscenities. I have merely stated my opinion, and have provided supporting claims. It seems that any critic of Luongo on this forum is a persona non grata, and is subjected to much vindictive assault. Such attacks, a common fallacy called ad hominem, shows that most whom support Luongo lack any substance to properly support a counterclaim.

5.3 cap hit next year. Most overpaid? Hardly.

POPULAR

Lecavalier is the most overpaid player. He's making $10 million this season, more than Crosby and Ovechkin, and he's not even a point per game.

How about Chris Drury at $8,050,000?

Gomez at $8,000,000?

Briere at $8,000,000?

Redden at $8,000,000?

Visnovsky at $7,000,000?

Horcoff at $7,000,000?

He is over rated and makes routine saves dramatic so ppl would think that he is better than he really is. We need to get rid of lu and that ridiculous 'luuuuuu' chant. Worst chant ever - would like Lu more if he did not have that annoying chant with him.

At least Visnovsky isn't that bad. Although he is making lots of money for his age, he still puts up some decent point totals. Cap hit is 5.6M, so as long as he produces it isn't that painful.

Wade Redden is a definite definition of pain, he has a 6.5M cap hit for 12 points. ^_^

2. Mika Kiprusoff - $5.85Mil
3. Marty Turco - $5.7Mil
4. Tomas Vokoun - $5.7Mil

Luongo is not overpaid. His cap hit is perfect for an all-star goaltender.

Players like Wade Redden, Scott Gomez, and Chris Drury are overpaid.

Vokoun get's paid quite a bit of money, he is a beast though, his stats don't lie. And he is on a panthers team that doesn't have much depth on D anymore.

While it is true that both Scott Gomez and Brian Campbell are grossly overpaid, they are both important members, currently and in the future, for their respective teams. However, it is doubtful, that in a few years, Luongo will be any more than a backup goalie, or at best, a second tier starter. Therefore, it is fair to say, Luongo is the more overpaid player, when considering the entire length of the players' contracts.

The same can also be said for Lecavalier.

He was not good tonight. And he has been bad a LOT since the epic road trip started. He had better start focusing, it is what he gets paid for. I am quite disappointed at his focus and consistency this season.

I would like to see you go play 50 (or whatever amount of games hes played) games in a NHL season, having fans get upset by your smallest mistakes, and deal with having little support from your teammates for months because of injuries and have a winning record.

Over paid or not, he is defintely one of the most over rated player in the entire league, behind maybe a Jay Bo in Calgary. This guy somehow got the reputation as one of the best goalies in the world and this "best goalie" lable just stuck with him, regardless of the ways he plays....

Well, over paid / over rated or not, it is too late now as he will be our goalie for the next many years. He has a no trade clause too.......all we can do is keep our fingers crossed and hope he is indeed the best goalie in the world.

The truth really hurts, but Kane and Kesler did tell us the truth already......

For anybody bashing Visnovsky, being from Edmonton (where he played majority of the season) he's not too too highly overpaid. He's actually quite a sound defenceman and especially for a team like the Oilers he didn't do too bad. He may not be worth the money he's making but at least he makes decent plays.

There isn't a gross amount of productive seasons coming up in the future for Brian Campbell and Scott Gomez. They are also both 30 years old, and will or if not already start to put less points on the board. Maybe resulting them, going into lower roles also like Luongo apparently being a backup in a few years.. Montreal and Chicago or whoever has those players when they start to decrease point wise, will not be to happy. For example, a Scott Gomez being a bottom six player putting up 30-35 points a year for however many millions he makes.
